It is very possible you are referring to the "Fun and Done" patterns by Susan Nelson of Prairie Sky Quilting.  Her patterns are sold in many quilt shops and she also has a website at  I was Susan's pattern tester for " Fun and Done".  Another possibility is that it was from one of Sharon Pederson's books.  I believe her books are titled "Reversible Quilts" and "More Reversible Quilts".   Hope this helps.

Sounds like it might be a Fun and Done using the Batting Buddy where you sandwich the backing and batting together and then sew material in a pattern on top and when you are done you have a quilted block with material out to the side that becomes your sashing when you put all the squares together.  You can search for 'Fun and Done' to find patterns.  I've not seen it in any books but I've seen them sold individually.
