Virginia "Ginnie" Leiner's Blog – December 2013 Archive (10)

Thank you for being a friend; Mark and Pam Allmendinger and their quilt "Mind Your P's and Q's"

There have been a few times in my life when I was truly blessed beyond measure.  The first was to be born in a loving family.  The second was to have two daughters with an outstanding man.  Mark and I married in 1973 when we were just babies, really, with no clue who we were or what marriage was.  We hung in there for 17 years and two daughters.  Then the next surprising…

Yes, we can keep our hats on! My sweetheart and I and our Christmas quilt "You Can Keep Your Hat On"

Today is tree trimming day and we took a few minutes out to take our picture for the blog with our quilt "You Can Keep Your Hat On."   It is a beautiful run up to Christmas day and snowing like crazy.  I must admit this is the most relaxing December I have ever had as the quilt project wrapped up on Thanksgiving and all the quilts have found their way home.  I am even taking…

Sarah, Alex and Huey Warren with "Christmas for Cowboys" in sunny California

On my mother, Ramona's side of this family, there are six grandchildren, now all grown and spread out across the country with spouses and families of their own.  But as children, these kids were all united for a week of fun in the summer time on what came to be called "Gramma week."  My mom would pack up her Nissan with junk food and kids and take them away for a week of…

The Family Center, Bev and Bob Mitchum and their quilt, "Scootin' Around Christmas"

On Thanksgiving night, after most of the family had gone home or gone to bed, George and I had the opportunity to spend some quiet time with my sister Bev and brother-in-law, Bob, talking about the day, the family, the future.  I had the opportunity to tell my sister that I considered them and their lovely home to be the center of our family, the place where everyone comes…

My Co-conspirator, my quilting buddy, my lovely daughter Becky with husband Todd and my granddogs; oh, their quilt, "And We Like Sheep"

One of the most satisfying things in my life this past decade has been purchasing sewing machines for my two daughters, Becky and Jamie.  Ironically, it was my oldest daughter, Jamie who asked for the machine but my youngest daughter, Becky was the one who really took to the craft.  How often do you get the satisfaction of sharing a passion with a daughter?  I do not mean to…

Jim and Ramona Tennison with "The Old Man's Log Cabin" and the Warren great grandchildren

Mothers and daughters.  The eternal struggle to both define ourselves as "nothing like our mothers" and cherish those things that make us alike. We look so much alike, my mother and I, that MY grandson, Wyatt calls her Gramma Gigi, which is his name for me. We both love books and movies, good food and wine, and we could talk, talk, talk forever.  Politically and religiously,…

Families and Quilts are naturals together - the Brian and Jenny Warren family in Pasadena, California with "Christmas Postcards from the Edge"

Hope, Kate, Hannah and Josiah people the happy household of my nephew, Brian and his wife, Jennifer in Pasadena, California where "Christmas Postcards from the Edge" now joins the clan.  Brian and Jenny were the first of the cousins on my mom's side of the family to marry and have a jump start on the rest of the cousins in family members.  What a happy crew they are and they…

Jamie and Jeff Osborn and their quilt "Lady of the Lake" in Livermore, California

The holidays are the time of year when I am a bit pensive about my children and their families living far from George and I.  This morning as I sit in my breakfast nook in cold and  snowy southwest Pennsylvania, listening to Christmas CDs and sipping my tea, I feel simaltaneously very far and very close to my children in Livermore, California and Plano, Texas.  I am very…

A Christmas quilt for my grandson, Wyatt Zachary Osborn

Is there a boy in there? find the boy among all the stuffed animals and oh yeah, here is his Christmas quilt.  Jamie and Jeff, my daughter and son-in-law, Wyatt's parents, told me they picked out this quilt for him because they thought it was something that would grow with him, not be too young for him as he got older.  I always felt it was a quilt that could stay out all…

"The Quilt of the Second Daughter" and her new owners

This is the first of 15 posts featuring the new owners of the quilts of "2013 - The Year of the Christmas Quilt" featuring my baby sister, Denise with her husband Martin and their dog companion, Campbell.  Denise says she selected this quilt (after her niece, my daughter Becky took "And We Like Sheep") because she liked the snowmen motif.   My husband took this great picture…
