I am about to start home machine quilting my very first real full size quilt. I have been doing a number of practice sandwiches for the last 5 weeks or so. I increased the size of the sandwiches as I progressed with the practice, to get accustomed to working with a larger size under the needle and in the throat of the machine. Even though I have the extra length in the throat with the Janome Horizon, I know it will still be a challenge. I am not Leah Day, or Patsy Thompson. They make it…
ContinueWe just got back yesterday, and got internet today. I use polyester batting. The children's hospital here in eastern Ontario prefers it, as it is light, warm, and hypo-allergetic. In Fla., everyone prefers cotton. When there is a scrim layer on it, l put that closest to backing. If you don' t like poly, and find wool too expensive, a cotton/ polyester blend works well...toss in dryer on warm/ delicate for 20 min. I' ve had excellent results with cotton as batting and minkie fleece as backing. That combo can be quilted on domestic if you spray baste the sandwich. On a frame, take care not to stretch backing at all. As to brand, l use what l find at a decent price, as long as it' s a known brand.
