Hi!  I'm a newbie here.   While I live in Arizona, I was born and raised in Tennessee just outside of Knoxville. The name of the little town is Powell, and I still have family lin the area.

I love to keep up with what is going on in Tennnnessee Quilting.  I hope and plan to come home and live in the Knoxville area one day and hope top still be quilting when I do.

How do you cut/measure for borders? What width is the best size for a border? The piece that the border will be added to measures 34.5 wide by 69 long. I know those are probably odd measurements. Any suggestions and help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks Dawn and Phaye. I was hoping it wouldn't be a problem because I have some fabric that will be perfect for this pattern.

Thank you Karen for the heads up. I will definately put it on my list of things to do next time I am in Memphis, and I will try and remember to have at least $100. too. I am sure Walmart has a cover charge. LOL........

My favorite quilt shop in Memphis is Klassy Kat's as well.  Be warned, it's like walmart...you can't leave without spending $100.00.

Cindy....I agree with Dawn.  Subbing the cotton for the flannel should be no problem.

Comment by Dawn Redmond on January 12, 2012 at 8:49am

Cindy, I feel sure that there would be no problem at all using cotton.

Can someone answer this for me, I found a quilt pattern that I would like to make. The instructions for the quilt say the fabric used is flannel. I really don't want to use flannel, can I use cotton instead without any problems?

Klassy Katz in Memphis (Bartlett) is a great shop. Everything you need is there: supplies, fabrics, Bernina machines, great classes, and very friendly salespeople.  Memphis also has a nice little shop called Quiltsmith's (Cordova) where I often find fabrics I like.  I enjoy the friendly staff in this shop as well.
