2021 PHD Challenge
Have you decided that this is finally the year you clear up those unfinished projects of the past? Join in the fun, and earn your PHD in completing those projects half done! Here are the 6 rules:
- List limited to 6 projects for the year ( average 2 mo. per project)
- Ufo projects only ( must be already started)
- You must have the pattern, fabrics, backing ,and batting for completion on hand
- Photos of each unfinished piece must be posted after your list.
- Make a list of what is left to do below each project's name (eg: quilt, bind, etc..)
- ☆ optional...tell us why a project has " stalled"... do you need help? Etc.

I had a very productive Saturday. I quilted all day with the guild I used to belong to and have rejoined on Zoom. I had to sew, press and cut all within the walls of my tiny den which has no windows but it was such fun to listen to all the chatter of quilters. I learned new things too. They buy hamburger patty paper (very thin) which is 5 1/4" square from the cash and carry wholesalers for 1000 priced at $8.95 to do their string quilts. The paper is on Amazon but more expensive. Lots of quilting to use up that paper!

Kris, I really like your Visions of the East. It is my kind of quilt! I wish that I had a design wall. I used to have one until I had a wall of cupboards built. I needed the storage space more than the wall. Your wedding ring quilt is so beautiful and the quilting is so intricate. I just can't imagine myself doing a difficult quilt like that.
I feel so badly to hear of family members getting covid, Chris and Linda. I'm glad that your grandson and his mother are recovering and the exposed family members have tested negative, Chris. And Linda, I hope that someone lets you know how your son is doing. You are in a similar situation to me - I wish that I could communicate with my son but he is not ready.
Chris, lovely to hear about the progress on your studio. We are awaiting the pictures.

Thanks everyone for the concern for my son and his family. They are all doing well and recovering with no major effects, thank goodness. They are, however, still on quarantine until next week. My older son and grandson both tested negative last week and are free to go back to work and school as of Tuesday of this week.
Sewing studio progress is getting EXCITING now. My brother-in-law is a carpenter and he has been coming to work on the drywall every day. It is just about ready to sand now and he is going to run all the trim on the doors and windows and install the remaining interior doors today. He thinks he can have it primed by tomorrow afternoon. Then it will just be paint and flooring left! Could be done before month end at this rate.
Kris-I love your quilts! That Visions of the East is spectacular. I can't wait to see that finished.
Riana-You must be really excited about getting a new long arm machine. I am happy that I am fortunate enough to own my own long arm. I hope to upgrade to a larger one in a couple of years, but this one works fine for now.

Riana - I used 5 inch squares to make 4 1/2 inch HSTs. You could use the 4 1/2 inch squares and end up with 4 inch HSTs. Your quilt would just be smaller. I still have lots of left over fabric to pick from. Do you need a care package? I know I can rustle up some orphan squares to send you!

You're doing a fabulous job, Kris. I'm not sure how many 4.5" squares l've saved , but all my various squares need to get used, as l'm running low on fabric, and we're in another lockdown, though I did buy about 4 yd just before.

Riana - they are 4 1/2 inches, and there are over 300 - I think 328 - of them.

Chris - so nice to have you back! Yay for new sewing spaces. I hope you enjoy yours.
But boo on people sick with Covid, and no grandchildren for Easter. Here's hoping you are all able to enjoy Fourth of July together. I trust those who were sick are recovering now.

Progress report: House in Ohio was in fine shape after sitting empty for 6 months, no repairs needed. Everything that needed to be moved from the RV to the house has been done, and the RV cleaned. Today it gets new tires, and then moved to its storage spot. And what does all that have to do with PHDs??? Had to get the work done first before I could start playing, lol!
Half of the Visions of the East quilt is assembled. I'll take that half off the design wall and go to work on laying out the second half. All the rings on the Wedding Star quilt have been quilted. Next up - the melons inside the rings.

Chris, how exciting to get a nice renewed studio space! Although l'm keeping my sewing room as is where is ( in laundry room downstairs) I too have a new place for my new longarm arriving later this month ( l hope!) The 7 ft frame and 13" Bailey were in our upstairs guest room. I sold that setup and have cleared a place in our seldom used den for the new 10ft. frame with 18" longarm( out with grandkids' toys...outgrown anyway,lol). I should be working on my travel quilt, but first l want to finish the doggie quilt l'm donating to Humane Society for their much needed new building in town. It'll be the first quilt on my new setup.

Hello ladies! It has been a while since I checked in. I have not done any sewing this past week except for quilting a charity quilt on my long arm as a trial run for this charitable organization. When I basted it to the top, the sides were CRAZY wavy. I did my best to spray them and get out what I could, but it was clear the borders had been just sewn to the perimeter of the quilt with no measuring.
I was able to schedule my mom's first COVID vaccine for her and she went and had it done last week. She will go in for her second shot the first week of May. My youngest son's family has been exposed to COVID and the older grandson and his mother both tested positive this past week. My son and the younger boy have both been negative so far. However, both sons families are on quarantine, so I won't be able to see my grandsons for Easter. :-(
Barbara, I too need to practice FMQ on my long arm. I am not a natural doodler, so I struggle with getting that muscle memory where the quilting looks good. I hope to practice more when my studio remodel is complete and I have everything set up in the new space.
I like to sew and chat with my friend Missy who is in Ohio. She is really my only quilting sister...It is great that technology allows us to video call for free now. How I wish that technology had been around when my husband was in the Marines and stationed overseas. The phone bills were quite ridiculous back then!

Barbara, if you keep practicing designs with pen/ paper or whiteboard, you will improve even when not quilting...doodle, doodle, doodle! We all start at the beginning.My first efforts reside at the bottom of dog's travel kennel,lol.
Liz keeps me at the task...no popping out for coffee, laundry load etc. ( though Molly's doggie breaks are non negotiable). I got 7 blocks sewn out of tiny pieces.

I am working on my 2nd project for the 2021 challenge, Elephants And Cat. I am pressing the backing today. Today I quilted with Riana and I got 10 blocks done using the left over fabric from Elephants And Cat. We talk and sew. It's fun! We do a lot of both.
