2021 PHD Challenge
Have you decided that this is finally the year you clear up those unfinished projects of the past? Join in the fun, and earn your PHD in completing those projects half done! Here are the 6 rules:
- List limited to 6 projects for the year ( average 2 mo. per project)
- Ufo projects only ( must be already started)
- You must have the pattern, fabrics, backing ,and batting for completion on hand
- Photos of each unfinished piece must be posted after your list.
- Make a list of what is left to do below each project's name (eg: quilt, bind, etc..)
- ☆ optional...tell us why a project has " stalled"... do you need help? Etc.

Linda, what a cute block, I love the house. I'm waiting to see the Thimbleberries Pansy quilt, I'm a big fan of all her patterns and have made many of them.
Dee, that's so funny that Riana spotted your list in the picture of your blocks, she is a real eagle eye. You can't slip anything past her, however she notices things that can make things easier for you. She has certainly given me some really good tips for staying organized, that was never one of my strong skills. Now I just pretend that she is watching me and I'm better at not leaving a mess.

My breaks happen when 1-bobbin runs out, 2-my pieces hide lol
Today is QOV Sew at Home day .. off to a quick appointment and run to the grocery store to make lasagna for tonight and a breakfast casserole for the week of lunches. Have to make a quick list ..

A break is sometimes needed, Linda, even if it's unplanned. I find sometimes l get so involved with my project that l forget l'm past my best. A person can only concentrate so long...then things start going south,lol. I've noticed it's usually around 3 or 3:30 , when my bobbin runs out, a needle seems blunt, a piece mysteriously dissappears, or worse yet is sewn in wrong place.

Sorry Riana. I know I was late deciding if I was going to join in this year. It all stemmed if my physical therapy was going to continue or not. I spent most of today in the sewing room...and even got my mile walk in! I have almost all the rows of my Thimbleberries pansy quilt together. Had unexpected visitor this afternoon. Otherwise, I would have finished and been ready for the borders.

Dee, that'll be an intricate quilt to work on. I see a corner of your list in photo...you have 7 listed? We have a limit of 6. You'll have to set one aside until the others are finished, please.

Now that I no longer have physical therapy, I'm trying to sew in the mornings, hopefully tomorrow I can start assembling my Thimbleberries pansy quilt....after my photo shoot with an adorable little Havipoo and her mom for some doggie accessories I made earlier this week.

Riana, I'm adding to my list....Jacquelynne Steves' BOM My Hometown, Block 1 done, all fabrics cut except had to order another yard for border fabrics. Have a Hawaii panel and I'll be using leftovers for the backing. Hope to have done for Christmas for my DIL Rhoda. Here's Block 1. Took me 2 mornings to get it done.

Here is my Civil War Tribute pattern and 1st 3 months of blocks .. I screwed up month 4 and had to dig / purchase a couple replacement fabrics .. will put this on my wall so I can stare at it while I finish gnomes

I love the little fort builders to use any and all materials for making forts in Mimi's house. The new ORL that I finished will be the latest addition to the building supply.
Dee, I love that Gnome quilt. I have seen several made. Gnomes are really "in" for quilting these days. I also think the baby quilt is adorable.
I have all the pieces made on my Christmas En Provence quilt and will start assembling blocks today. I made a few changes to block and colors for mine so I could keep it Christmas colors rather than Bonnie Hunter's original colors. Hoping to have a progress photo for you this weekend. When I get this top done I am hopeful I can concentrate on completing the Green Argyle bargello that I carried over from last year.

On the weekend, my grandd was over for a sewing session, so grandma didn't get much done on her travel quilt... just one small square. I was too busy supervising cutting of fabric, pinning ,sewing and yes, l introduced her to the seam ripper, because she kept sneaking up the speed l had the 6500 set to and couldn't maintain the foot along edge. After taking out 3 or 4 seams, she finally settled on a reasonable speed for her steering ability,lol. She's sewing a new quilt for herself. It'll take quite a fewcmore sessions ( and we seriously need more fabric!)

Riana, I know about those little "fort builders" we have a bunch of them in our family. There are quilts that have been used for a lot of things they were not they were not intended for, but they are well loved and that's all I care about. Quilts and pillow cases are the big deal for our little ones, lots of arguments over pillow cases on family camping trips.

Gail, lol, the original maker was me! I started quilting in 1975, when l took weekly evening classes for 6 wk.l learned applique, hand piecing , and hand quilting. We made portable little frames using 4 wood slats held by 4 little woodworking clamps and thumb tacked our blocks on that. My first was a quilt as you go , using that frame. I only started machine quilting in 2009 after l started making Linus quilts. My dd's quilt is only 18 yr. old, but has been used daily and with 3 little fort builders putting it to the test.

Riana, I understand your daughter wanting the hand quilting on the old quilt. As you know I am a hand quilter and I love doing it. WhenI first started quilting, about 25 years ago, I was shocked to find out that most quilts were being machine quilted.. I always had those visions of old ladies sitting around a frame and had no idea what a huge business quilting had become. I had always admired old quilts in antique stores and thought I might like to make one, had no idea that a person could become addicted to it, for me it replaced smoking. I do think that beautiful old quilt you are restoring deserves to be done the way the original maker wanted it to be, so get those hands busy. It's going to be gorgeous.

Dee, your Gnomes is so cute! Lennon is so classic. I am sure this will be a quilt that is kept long after he is grown.
Oh, Barbara! We could still see your creativity by a pic of the PJ tops without you in them! They sound so great!
Riana, I get the need to make children happy and going the extra mile with the hand quilting. Kudos to you!
Zoe, we have all been where you are. No explanations needed. Things have to take priority and it isn't always our happy place. It is what it is. Think how good you will feel when the projects are done and you can resume sewing without it hanging over your head.

Dee, great progress!
My restoration job will be taking longer than l'd planned. Daughter visited and while looking over progress, l told her l planned to requilt the entire center by machine. She was dissappointed , because she said she so much loved the hand quilting ( mostly gonecnow). What's a mom to do? Lol, she loves her quilt...so it'll be getting the " hands on" treatment. I still have the drawing of a rose l quilted at center of eack wedding ring.

I loaded the backing to the recliner quilt on the frame. I put on the batting and basted it to the backing. Next I think I had better put a fresh bobbin in then baste the top to the batting and backing. Then I will do some simple designs. It may be all straight lines to start with. LOL!!
Deanna, Your holiday and baby quilt are charming.
I bought matching jammies for my husband and I for Christmas and I put Gnomes on the front of the shirts. His shirt had Gnomes (male and female) sitting in the back of a red truck. Each had a cup of cocoa and fall leaves falling around them. So Cute and mine, WInter Gnomes standing in the back of a truck with a pine tree and a wreath on the back of the truck. They have on their winter hats and gloves and are waving from the back of the truck. So Cute. I have another pair of gnomes sledding down a hill. I haven't decided where that is going to go yet. Our bottoms are gray/black plaid and the tops are black. They are warm and cozy. We are to shy to model them. LOL!!!
