Inspiring Quilters, Stitch by Stitch
When I was a kid, I loved when we went on road trips because my Dad would always stop at Stuckey's (Restaurant/ Truck Stop) and buy me a snowglobe of the places we had visited. I had dozens of them at one point in time, but over the years they were lost or broken. However, I always think about them, even today, whenever I travel somewhere.
Some people associate snowglobes with winter and Christmas time, so this is going to be 2 swaps in one. You can participate in either one or both, if you like. Since it will take a little longer for those who might want to do both, you will have until the end of November to get your blocks to me.
Blocks should start out at 13" x 13" so that the receiver can trim them down to 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".
Stuckey's Road Trip blocks can be on any color background, but the globe itself should be a recognizable destination or landmark. Even though it may not have a name on it, as my sample does, something about the piece should give us an idea of the locale. (ie. Cablecar - San Francisco, Grizzle Bear - Yellowstone) It can be where you're from, where you live, or some place you have on your bucket list.
Winter/Christmas block are to be on White or White on white/ off white backgrounds. The globes can be anything related to winter or Christmas, and the more glitter or sparkly the prints, the better. Birds, Angels, Santa, Penguins, just about anything.
Make 12 blocks, send in 11, get 11 back. You can either send a self-addressed, stamped return envelope, or to make it easier, you can send a check for $7.35, and I will send them back to you in a flat-rate envelope.

Please add me to Christmas. Is there a pattern or certain size of the globe? Can you sign up twice with different fabrics in each group?
Sure, just let me know which group/s you want to sign up for and if you want to do one group more than once, that is fine also. The pattern and size are all up to you. It just needs to fit within the finished square size. The finished block will be 12 x 12. We ask that you start with a 13" x 13" square so that the receiver can trim it down to 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" when they get them. FatCat patterns has Snowglobe patterns, and if you have an embroidery machine there are several vendors on Etsy who sell snowglobe applique patterns.
We never got to stop at Stuckey’s- with five kids, I suspect Dad and Mom hesitated to go there. Lol. And I do love snow globes, Kathy, but I better not join this one with so many other WIPs to tackle.
I actually think this is a super cute idea. If i weren't being so firm on fi ups i would do this.
When i was little we always stopped a Stuckeys. I loved it!
Sorry to hear that you gals won't be able to join us for these swaps, but you have until the end of June to change your minds. I will be posting a few pictures of my completed blocks.
I will keep that in mind for sure!
Hey Kathy I went to the quilt store on Saturday (just to drop off two quilts for the longarm) and just couldn't resist some of the prints so please count me in on the Stuckeys snow globe. I won't commit to the Christmas one right now because I have plenty of WIP's to work on also. Hey Carla we did a lot of camping & traveling by roads also with five kids, but my parents never and I mean NEVER let us loose in a Stuckey's-you were very lucky!
Okay, thanks, Kathy. I will keep it in mind.
I would like to sign up for Christmas twice. I've never even heard of Stuckey's. What is it?
Judy, they were these roadside restaurants and souvenir shops all over the south. You could stop for lunch and pick up a shot glass or snowglobe of the local sights. They had all sorts of cheap little souvenir things to keep kids entertained on long trips. Some of their souvenir items are quite pricey now on eBay. I don't think there are but a few of them left, but at one time they were quite popular.
Looks like fun, but I am not allowed to join in any swaps until I finish up the ones I have done already.
