New Quilt Shop Owners

Here's a spot to share wishes, dreams, plans and realities with others who are beginning the adventure of opening a quilt shop. I've been gathering small amounts of supplies, bolts of fabric, batting, thread etc. and plan to hold a 'sort of grand' opening on the Saturday in November known as Small Business Saturday (the day after the malls' Black Friday and online shoppers' Cyber Monday.) I'd love to share ideas, questions and resource information with other new quilt shop operators. Will you join me here?

It's getting closer! I've ordered new signs for the Quilt Shop, and have begun advertising hours more consistent than we've had before in our Wooden Toy and Gift shop. Planning another warehouse fabric shopping trip at the end of October ... right after we order our firewood for the winter!

Hello everyone!  Thanks for the group invite.  While my shop is all online at Curlicue Creations, I absolutely love running it.  I'm sure it's a different experience from an actual brick and mortar shop, though.  I see some Island Batik fabrics, vintage dress patterns, a little of this and that, and quilt patterns.  Many of the quilt patterns are my original designs.  I hope to expand more in that direction in the future, and also wholesale my patterns when my now 4 year old gets into school.  It's great to meet all of you.  Have a super day!

I've sold two spools of thread, two packs of emroidery needles and one pack of universal needles, 1/2 yard of polyester batting to go under someone's office Christmas tree, four fat quarters and two remnant pieces of red and white toile print.  More importantly, I'm having fun talking with friends and new friends about quilting!

Welcome members~ Rick and I have formally opened our quilt shop and are calling it Quilters' Quarters. I've started a web page for it at my author/quilter site. And the opening coincided with the launch of my first quilt-themed mystery book, titled The Quilter's Quarters and featuring an elderly couple named Henry and Helen who have a small quilt shop and are experiencing some mysterious happenings there. Their story will continue in a series of books. But this first edition also includes a full color quilt journal of thirty of my quilts - quilts that will appear in future mysteries of Helen and Henry.  Stay tuned! Or come visit us, virtually at the web site or in person!

Hi Connie,

Sorry to hear that the shop hasn't done well, but happy you were able to continue it in your home, even if only in a smaller way. If I had a lot of money I would offer to buy much of your stock, but we're trying to start conservatively. I have purchased (from a wholesale supply) about a dozen bolts of fabric, three dozen spools of dual duty thread in basic colors, and a few books of quilt patterns on sale at AQS's site. I'm going through my own stash and planning to cute a variety of left over pieces into fat quarters, and have a friend who will place her flat folds in consignment with me. I'll offer beginning quilt lessons one night a week and a few people seem interested. We've found our wood craft shop lagging in sales the past two years and have heard from other artists nearby that they, too, see a drop in customers. But we're going forward with this, as it is a fifteen mile drive to the nearest quilt store to buy thread or a package of needles :)

Hi all,

I opened my own little quilt shop here in Hyndman, PA (very small town) in April, but unfortunately, it has not done well at all.  I really have enjoyed having my own quilt shop and now we have made the decision to move it to our home, to save on expenses, but it's a much smaller area.  I have 167 bolts of fabric, lots of rulers, patterns, rotary cutters, sewing machines and other items that I'm going to sell at wholesale or below prices, if anyone is interested, just message me.  Thanks
