Marian, what size hoops does the Sophia 2 have?  If I remember right the original Sophia is limited to the 4x4 hoop.  The husband of a friend of mine bought one for himself after she taught him how to do cross stich by hand.  So he embroiders quilt blocks & she assembles & quilts the top.

Connie I am happy to hear you are enjoying your machine that is 3/4 of the battle.  Have fun with it and explore there are some very informative websites out there as well as a couple of excellent magazines geared towards machine embroider.

 

Janet, I love the Janome 350e, it is what got me hooked on embroidery.  You might want to explore some of the newer machines.   Babylock had the Sophia 2 that is capable of sewing and embroidering for about $1000 if you shop around you can find it for less.  We have them here at Tiger Lily Quilts and have sold a number of them, with very happy customers with there machine.

I have a Singer CE150 that interfaces with my laptop. My daughter uses it more than I do, but we have been having some fun with it. The hoop sizes are 4x6 and 5x7 and so far that has worked for us.

Marian, I use a Janome 350e and am limited to the 4x4 and 5x7 hoops.  When I bought my machine I couldn't understand why anyone would want to stitch out a larger design, but after doing this for 4 yrs now I understand!  Maybe one day I can afford to purchase a program such as Embird that splits the designs so you can use the smaller hoops.  In the mean time I'm just enjoying what I am able to do.
