hi jean! recently there was a discussion on aunt becky on another forum i follow. seemed pretty mixed as to quilters opinions re: ease of use. i tried the spoon thing years ago also. i find what works best for me is the simpler the better. a needle and good quality thread, hoop in my lap.

The last quilt I hand quilted, I used "Aunt Becky" underneath so not to jab the needle into my finger and it helps regulate the stitches.  Give it a try.

or not ..i never ever got used to a thimble. before or after i started quilting. i've tried them all ..regular to leather ..they bother me no end. i get very nice callus and happily quilt away for hours! ..or until i can't sit anymore lollol and i would never ever use spray baste with a hand quilting project.
..so see ...hand quilting is like cooking ..,there's as many ideas and ways of doing as there are cooks & quilters. and nothing is right or wrong ..quilt police not allowed! :))

That should read " silicone", lol. Leather ones are available, but costly. Get used to a regular thimble before investing.

Best advice l can offer...

• start practicing with thin polyester batting, easier to work through than cottons
• experiment with different lengths of needles to find your favorite
• try metal thimbles, silicoe ones & new combo ones to get a comfy fit...then always use it.
• stay away from spray baste until you're experienced
• only use proper hand quilting thread...it has a waxy coat to help it slide through fabric. Don't cut the thread too long, or it may tangle. Once in a while, let needle hang loose on the thread & let it untwirl.
• take breaks at 20 min. intervals, refocus your eyes on a distant object, get up /stretch.

hi all ..ok! 5" of snow, few trips out to shovel said snow ..millions of finches, juncos, towhees and two pair of mourning do es outside on my deck beyond my window here as i play on web. i did a search for "hand quilting how-to's" and came up w lots of ideas. so i'm going to post links to ones i would recommend to anyone who asked me to teach them how to hand quilt. each one has suggestions for batt, needles, thread and technique ..basic stuff. i use #9 betweens and standard quilting thread. except for miniatures ..that's all different game. riana & will, i'm sure, be happy to share their preferred quilting materials also. so ..hope this helps you sandy and if you do search on whatever search engine you prefer (my preferred is Ixquick) using the wording i noted above, you should come up with more places to look, videos to watch ..whatever.

..nice page. i love this site! visit often, it's full of wonderful ideas & info. i thread baste my quilts to be hand quilted. if miniature or smallish i use the binder clips to attach backing to table then layer, larger quilts are pinned to an antique c-clamp frame. i use mostly, generals' chalk pencils to mark as i go. i used to mark, baste and quilt. but i stopped that a long looonng time ago. now i mark as i go.

another great site. i used to subscribe to Threads magazine for many years. i was mostly still sewing clothes then but they did have a once a year or so special issue featuring quilts, quilting, quilt history. this is a very good tutorial & well illustrated.

this is the website for American Patchwork & Quilting. i've subscribed to this mag for years and i love it. great patterns and how-to articles in every issue. this link is for their online tute for handquilting and it's excellent. especially well illustrated stitch technique for buried knots, traveling from one area to another & more.

also ..for those of you who are new to MQP, it usually functions perfectly. i am member of and read some other quilt forums which all seem to have subscribed to the same homepage format. mqp is my preferred because you can check in and respond to conversations going on in individul groups or discussions or blogs w/o having to start new threads. but, unfortunately there's been a glitch develope in the way homepage is showing, but according to last blog on subject posted by site administrater, help is on the way! hopefully as our techie white knights come galloping in to our rescue, they'll continue at speed guaranteed not to allow them to see any rough spots shown in our piecing and or quilting efforts! lollol

sandy, et al ... orville has been inactive for over a year now. many of our members are inactive and then suddenly wander in when a current topic is of interest. most just sorta hang out, lurk, read. but tho orvilles video is short, it will help and more importantly, if you scroll down to the comments to his second comment re: his technique and what he's doing w his left hand, he explains it very well.

it's snowing again here, sounds like it will be a lot, so ..i may just spend some time on net today and find some more quilting videos for you sandy, & anyone else who has the bandwidth to enjoy them. there are two other hand quilting videos listed on same page that orvilles video is shown. look to the right of orvilles image on the page.
