We had a subthread (tee hee, no pun intended) about threads going on the Fabric discussion, and I thought it might be helpful to have a full discussion on it.

What kind of thread do you use when you quilt? The recommended ones are so expensive! Do you use all cotton? Is it ok to use regular sewing thread (e.g. polyester) for piecing and then use the more expensive thread for the actual quilting?

Where do you get your thread? Any great websites?

How do you save thread?

I'll reply more about this later, but for now I'll share my favorite thread site http://www.superiorthreads.com/

I buy the majority of my thread here, but I also use other brands.  This website has a wonderful education section and you'll learn more about thread than you ever wanted to know!  They have some great videos too!

OK...I'm back.  For piecing I always use GOOD 100% cotton thread...50/2 weight.  The ones I use most often are Masterpiece (by Superior) or Aurifil.  I use a 70/10 sharp needle.  For quilting I use all kinds of specialty quilting threads.  I used to believe that I should ONLY use cotton and nothing else, but I have since learned that contrary to popular opinion polyester thread does not cut through your fabric (this is for quilting I'm referring to; not piecing).  I love using Sulky Blendables by Sulky, King Tut by Superior and all of the other fun threads Superior sells.  I'm obviously hooked on that company.  I love their Kimono silk, which is a new line they started carrying.  I also like YLI 40 weight varigated.  For any kind of thread that isn't sold buy Superior I buy here: http://www.redrockthreads.com/ They have excellent prices.  I like varigated threads, but sometimes I use solids...YLI 40wt. or Aurifil 40wt., and like I said, just about everything Superior carries.  Keep in mind all of my thead choices are for machine quilting.  I don't do hand quilting so I don't have a clue there!
