Well, most of the artist blocks are in. One still needs more time and so I'm moving along without it. I have many choices to make as this project progresses.

If you can picture 8 blocks not all the same size done in fabric and some done in acrylic paints on canvas. My challenge is to place them in an interesting setting. At first I was all over the idea of making a scene of the valley with great mountain views, rivers, skiers, etc, then as things progressed, I began to see something different come into play. The color black has arrived and I'm seeing how this one color could "pop" all the artists blocks and it provides a great background for the most popular suggestion from the quilts input on our FB page, "flora and fauna" and so it goes.

Many of the quilters who have been aware of this project have chosen to not get involved. I was quite perplexed about that in the beginning and now months later, I've moved on and understand. This is not ordinary project. Its intimidating to many of our locals and with so many going south in the winter, they are not always around to keep to a schedule.

Anyway, I've decided that black is going to be the background color with hand and machine appliqued natural flora and fauna sproating and walking across the quilts as if its perfectly natural to do so. Funnier things have been seen on quilts.

Cool! I'm so glad you've taken a good look. I currently researching fireweed online for the right angle. If you come by any fireweed photos online, send them my way.

i soooooo love fireweed, andnone can see it here and there alongnthe roadsidesmin many place around usa, but it is basically escapees fr gardens, not native in "lower 48" ie south of alaska, and is considered an invasive species because it does so well every where but far north. first time i ever saw it, growing along a stream in washington state across fr my house, few days later county crew came in a sprayed w weed killer...i was sooooo upset, that is when i was told it is not allowed. lived in several states now, same in all of them. invasive.mi would love to northern prairies of alaska when it is blooming ..huge wonderful meadows of it!

oh yeah...don't forget the fireweed!
.......and the mooses bears and all the rest...

So true... I', pondering it as I redesign parts to make a set in seam. It seems doable at this point. Thanks for your encouragement, I'm appliquing the following northern flora and fauna:

bear, moose, fireweed, St. John's Wort, wild roses and saskatoon berries.

this sounds fascinating. will be watching for pictoral progress reports here! :)) a quilt celebrating a region, seems perfectly normal to me to jave flora and fauna meandering in and about the pictoral blocks in fact i think a little embroidered elements would be acceptable too. just sayin' lollol

...i did a quilt for a family once where, by the time of the golden anniversary event there were still quite a few members who had not submitted thier blocks. so...where thier family block was to be placed, i inserted blank muslin squares and sent the assembled quilt top with the blank squares to seattle washington. the family members that i was working with were upset that i was doing so much extra work. they also told me that when the quilt top was hung, the intended recipients loved the quilt and that the slackers were so embarrassed that several blank squares (i had prepared more to send w the quilt) were worked on at the dinner party w the slow responders being helped by fam members who had done blocks. then i got the top back. removed the blanks inserted the newly finished blocks and set to quilting.

would it be possible as you work up your setting arrangement that the one that is not done yet could be set in later before quiltmset for quilting? more work, bit we all know how seriously life can mess with our best intentions.
