or are a whole lot of the patterns in the quilt magazines these days, using such tonal fabric with so little contrast that you can't even tell what the pattern is until you look at the diagrams?

I find this kind of annoying, I can buy a blanket for lots cheaper than buying fabric and making a quilt if I want something that's virtually all one color.

I guess they are trying to showcase a fabric line, but nothing shines when it's just different size patterns of the same color fabrics throughout the whole quilt. I almost tossed my latest (shall remain nameless) magazine after looking at the first couple quilts because of this, luckily after those few there were some quilts with interesting colors and nice contrasts... so I didn't call them up and demand a refund right this minute for wasting my money on fabric ads disguised as quilt patterns.

I'm done with my rant now, carry on.

I stopped buying magazines about a year after I got my first copy of Electric Quilt. I still use graph paper pretty regularly but seriously, when you can sit down at your computer and in an hour have an original design with the colors you want, magazines are just inspirational...and now days they aren't even that so much.

I pretty well stopped buying that magazines b/c it just all seems the same pattern......I change the fabrics on most of what i do, b/c I just see patterns differently----designer does it in pastels, I have to go bold.....that kind of thing....and i'm not trying to put anyone down who designs a pattern or a fabric....I am in the process of trying to design my own patterns, and it's tough....but there is no reason to pay the prices for the magazines or even some of the books, when I already have a stack of them........I like looking at the different fabrics used in them, and the color combinations, though....

same here karen & viki....not only that but for many years now...magazines that are not partners...like qnm & quiltmaker will publish the same award winning quilts. like the conner quilt years ago. and it is still popping up in exhibits etc. i was amazed the first time i saw and read about that quilt. still amazed the nxt time. but now...come on magazine publishers....there are sooooooooo many exciting, original and fantastic quilts out there being made by non professionals like our own dear ginnie here at mqp that they could do feature articles on. quilts made by people just like me, you and a lot of quilters around the country that get an inspiration and turn out what may be a one shot wonder ....but what a wonder!!!!

nope Karen, it would seem you are not alone, lol. I agree that many of the patterns are just rehashes of the same pattern they used last year but in blue now. Makes me crazy, I definitely won't be renewing any of my current subscriptions, waste of money.

I have the same gripe, but also that after so many magazines, I find it hard to buy one b/c the patterns start looking the same as ones I already have, just a different fabric line....as I don't buy fabric by name brand, but by what I like and can afford, fabric lines really mean nothing to me.....I am glad there are artistic folks out there who can design fabric, but ......and I can echo those that state that if I wanted patterns for potholders and such, there are a million sites out there......same with aprons and such.....i can design my own.......i thought I was the only one who felt like that.....lol

I agree, I'm not looking to make eyeglass holders, or placemats or any other odd number of things that show up as 'quilting' projects in some magazines... crafters make all those things, not quilters

or cut up sheets & sew pieces back together again...same look, same creative satisfaction...hmm cancel that

i have let a few of mine go to...if they go to goodwill intact for a few months/issues in a row..i am done w them.

...and i want quilts...not craft projects.

lol.. I have noticed that actually, but at least some of those are something I might consider making.. but these one color things, they should have just made a set of sheets and been done with it. I actually had let all my subscriptions go for a few years and just started a few of them up again.. kind of sorry I wasted the money on a couple of them.
