Inspiring Quilters, Stitch by Stitch
Now that I have finished my grandmothers flower garden quilt top and will start hand quilting a night, I decided to get back to work on my John Flynn double wedding ring quilt. I am making this quilt for my grandson Jacob when he gets married. Funny thing, he is only 7 years old and I hope to be be around when he does marry, but just in case, decided to do one now.
I have a big dilemma, I did not purchase enough of one of the fabrics. I went back to Hancock Fabrics here in Houston and they don't have anymore of it! I was hoping to make a full size quilt, but only have enough weddings to do a 68" x 68" quilt.
I have gone on line to Hancock to check on purchasing another yard of the fabric. Don't see it there.
I only have one small piece left with lettering on the selvage. This piece says "My Collec" 2006.
I am attaching a picture. It is a bright yellow back ground with blue flowers and vines. Does anyone have this fabric and be willing to sell it to me?
Thanks from Houston, TexasFabric.jpg

Comment by viki hagan on June 25, 2012 at 7:38pm This is how I did it..
1. Trace around the arc on a sheet of paper.
2. then with a regular straight edge ruler, measure from top point to top point.. don't worry about accounting for the curve.. divide that measurement by how many pieces you want (in my case with the 18" I did an arc with 6 , 7, and 8 divisions so I could get different effects with my fabric since I make so many of these.. obviously 6 divisions is faster to sew up than 8)
3. Next, take your ruler and measure from one corner on top of the arc (let's say inch and a half) 1 1/2 inches until you've made a tick every 1 1/2" across the entire width, let the arc ride above the ruler as you measure.
4. Do the exact same thing with the bottom of the arc, measure point to point-divide by your number of divisions, obviously your top measurement and bottom measurement will be different.
5. Then just draw a line from top mark to bottom mark along the arc and voila.. paper piece. You should easily be able to fit two to a page.
Then I just cut strips of fabric, stitch them to the paper, when all the pieces are on, place the template back on it and trim with the rotary cutter. Mostly the paper piece is for that crazy 11 degree angle John Flynn has some magic way of measuring on his sewing machine, lol.
Let me know if any of that was unclear.

Could you elaborate more on how you use the John Flynn acrylic arc template to make a paper piecing pattern from it. I love to paper piece and this sounds easier than stitch all 6 fabrics together using a 1/4" seam then going back to each seam and re-sew 3/16". I am using the 15" John Flynn template.\
Thanks,
Kathy
Comment by viki hagan on June 25, 2012 at 11:12am Donna, you really should have no problem then. Just a matter of patience.. something I have very little of, lol.
Comment by Donna Parker on June 24, 2012 at 11:50pm I have an arc that I got a long time ago...I have been quilting for over 30 yrs but have yet tried the Wedding Ring. I'm determined to make one sooner or later...thanks for the info.
Comment by viki hagan on June 24, 2012 at 10:52pm .. to clarify.. when you buy the templates from John Flynn, you will get the complete set.. there are others on the market but you usually only get the arc piece, which doesn't seem very helpful to me all on it's own...
Comment by viki hagan on June 24, 2012 at 10:49pm Donna, there are no simple patterns for a DWR, they are all pretty much the same.. I make one every month.. If you have some experience sewing curves, then any of the patterns you find will work.. if you don't, you may want to practice a bit before you tackle this quilt, it's not hard but it is time consuming and for someone and for someone without a whole lot of experience, it'll be challenging.. I use the same acrylic templates Kathy is using (John Flynn's), but I don't use his strip piecing method. I used his arc template and made a paper piecing pattern from it. then I piece the arcs and trim with a rotary cutter and the arc template and use the templates to rotary cut all the other pieces as well. The templates are expensive though and you'll want all of them, for the centers and the football pieces that go between the arcs.. to get the best fit.
I don't know your level of quilting so this may or may not be helpful.. Good luck either way!
Comment by Donna Parker on June 24, 2012 at 8:29pm I want to make a Double Wdding Ring so bad but do you have suggestions as a simple pattern
Comment by viki hagan on June 24, 2012 at 6:41pm not in my collection, sorry.. I had this problem with a dwr quilt a couple months ago, I ended up purchasing a fabric that had the same colors in roughly the same percentage of space, it was a completely different pattern but once it was in the quilt, you really couldn't tell since the pieces are so small...if you don't find any of that particular fabric, that might work for you as well
