Chautauqua NY

I spent all day with 2 of my sisters and my BFF at Chautauqua Quilt show. Had a great time......and spent money like a drunk sailor on leave. I left the vendors with a smile on their faces and $ in their pockets.

Orphan Quilts are now in the Massachusetts Registry of Quilts! (part 2)

This is the second orphan quilt, given to me by my brother-in-law, and taken to the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell for age appraisal. They suggest that the pattern is actually 'sunflower' due to the pointed petals. As you can see, the quilt is permanently soiled, and some threads and fabrics are deteriorating. I…

My ipad in it's new cover

Going away for the weekend I have made my ipad a new cover. It is constantly in and out of my bag and the cream leather is getting a little dirty. While I was busy sewing I had already begun to plan it's seasonal 'outfits', maybe a pumpkin for October and some special for Christmas,

I don't think it's quite what Apple intended for this marvellous piece of technology and I don't think that it will catch on with the guys in the City but it's great fun to make, and so easy, although my…

The life test of machine quilting....

Ok. I finished destroying the first sacrifice to the machine and thought I had a fairly decent command of the darn thing.

I was wrong.

I'm starting to think this machine is one of my life trials.. a key test for my place in heaven.

I got all nervously excited to start the first non-test-like quilt this morning. I got it all situated on the rails. I wound the bobbins. I threaded the machine and double checked the rails and bungees. I started sewing....I forgot to put the…

The Quilt Whisperer

This quilt was done for the 2012 Leavenworth, WA quilt show challenge - and won a 2nd place ribbon.  The theme of the challenge was "Fields of Fabric" and the challenge fabric was realized in the flower motifs in the right foreground.  I live in the mountains in Oregon and look out on mountains and forests and distant farmlands.  The challenge theme had me imagining those farmlands as crops of fabrics and of a woman looking out and whispering the fabrics into quilts.…

A Little Bit Will Do Ya

Today I started to work on my sewing room.  The majority of stuff has been moved out.  Walls scrubbed, and the taping has begun.  There are some small patches which need to be made so for now my progress is halted until Honey gets home from work.  After much consultation with the littlest minion and his mother we decided to not paint the ceiling.

Hmm all this nice white ceiling paint....maybe it is time to work on the sunroom/mudroom ceiling?!?!?  There is a reason for everything…

Orphan Quilts are now in the Massachusetts Registry of Quilts!

I took my orphan quilts to the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts, and had them appraised for age and condition. No surprise that the condition for both was 'poor', but the age surprised me. The Dresden Plate pattern (which, they tell me, is actually a sunflower pattern, as the petals of each…

Bias Binding Grandmother's Flower Garden (and other scalloped quilts)

Binding a quilt with scallops such as wedding ring or flower garden requires the binding to stretch around curves without bunching or cupping.

Here is the…

The Breaking of the Dawn

Even though I didn't feel spectacular today physically (why do little ones bring home every sickness and disease known to man once they start school).  Emotionally and mentally I was a ton better.  I worked on the quilt that Honey bought me during our trip to Florida.  Putting on the borders I am so stoked!

Quilting fever

Last summer I got quilting fever and was on a roll, knocking out a bunch of quilts through the spring.  I've kind of gotten over it now.  This always happens to me with crafts.  I turn into a maniac for a while and can't put the needles, the hook, or the sewing machine down, but then eventually I get worn out and leave unfinished projects in my wake.  I have a few UFOs that I would really love to get done, but I have absolutely no desire to sit at my machine right now.  I really need to…

thimble

  • I am looking for a hard black rubber thimble.  I got one at the Knoxville,Tn. quilt show 2009, but I lost it.  I paid around $30.00 for it. Can anyone help me out and find this company?

Continued adventures in machine quilting....

Ok, so I admit the last few days I've been avoiding the quilting machine. I finished up two quilt tops that were half done and since the only ones remaining to work on I am more studiously ignoring than the quilt machine...off to the quilting room I went.

I stared at it for awhile, then I replaced the broken needle, double checked the bobbin, put a battery in the little laser dealie and started sewing...and immediately wound up a small truckload of thread. So I fixed that, re-threaded…

New beginnings

Ok I will admit it I am in a funk.  I could almost say that my funk has changed to "funktion" which believe me is not a good thing. My life needed something so the "funk" would become "dysfunktional" and I can move on.

Step 1.  Change of scenery---ok that has been accomplished, I was released from the account I worked on for the…

Adventures in machine quilting... sort of.

So, as those of you who occasionally read my blogs know, I got a new Grace frame with a new Juki machine. Today was the trial run. I attached the cloth leaders (ouch the tips of my fingers are still sore from doing that). I turned on the machine and immediately broke the little piece that threads it for you. I have some serious talent, truly. I wound bobbins, I threaded the machine.. incorrectly the first two times then I figured out why it kept breaking. I attached a cute little baby quilt…

My UFO Quest

This year's New Years Resolution was to finish 120 UFOs of my over 130 then stopped counting projects.  It has been an uphill battle.  Some months it seems to fly by and I amke the 10 set for each month but other times I miss the mark and have to make it up the next month.  This is one of those months that I am having to make up 4 more on top of the 10 I expect to do.

If you would like to see the finishes thus far, you may look in my photos.  This all started when my daughter helped…
