quilt as you go

Does anyone know a book that tells how to "quilt as you go" where you bring the back fabric to the front and it ends up looking like a sashing?

Nothing ventured...

Almost withdrew the quilt from my first show ever at NCQS earlier this month (cold feet!)  So glad they encouraged me to go ahead...  So if anyone is hesitating to enter a quilt for competition (you know who you are!) - I say, "Just DO it!"  You never know what might catch a judge's eye...  (I'm still in shock!) …

Double Wedding Ring Quilt

Now that I have finished my grandmothers flower garden quilt top and will start hand quilting a night, I decided to get back to work on my John Flynn double wedding ring quilt.  I am making this quilt for my grandson Jacob when he gets married.  Funny thing, he is only 7 years old and I hope to be be around when he does marry, but just in case, decided to do one now.

I have a big dilemma, I did not purchase enough of one of the fabrics.  I went back to Hancock Fabrics here in…

Graph Paper and EQ

The last few days I haven't felt much like sewing, but I can't just in front of the tv mindlessly either. So I got out my great big graph paper and started doodling. I ended up with a little over a dozen different block patterns..then I opened up EQ and got them charted and colored and set into some real basic quilts. I haven't done that in a long time, forgot how much fun it can be.. anyway, here are a few of my favorites.…

Procrastination pays off!

I have another baby quilt ready to be quilted. It is adorable! I love every block, from the appliqued hippo and giraffe, to the pinwheels. I love it every bit as much as all of the others that I have made. In fact, looking at it makes me smile! But for some reason, I am totally avoiding finishing it. I look at it and think,"Wow, this is ready to be quilted and then the binding. After that it can be given to it's intended."

Funny how instead of finishing it, I picked up handfuls of…

Theaphy

I am new to blogging so I hope this ends up added right when I'm done. I am also new to this website and am loving all the tidbits and the communication from other quilters!  We are a mixed lot!  I recently have put my parents in a nursing home and have the dauting task of getting the house ready for sale.  My quilting room has been taken over with their book keeping and I am feeling overwhelmed!  It helps that the house is an hour and a half away, so I can find soooooo many reasons not to…

Free motion quilting

Hi everyone. I want to learn to free motion quilt. I have a bernina 180e so it does not have the stitch regulator. Every attempt I have made looks horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions how to start?

Still practicing on my A-1

A friend of my sister sent me several small quilts to practice on.  I have been discovering what works on some blocks and what doesn't.  I was really happy when Mary got the first two quilts  that she was very pleased, and said that my quilting was better than the person who she pays to quilt her quilts.…

Life Changes

My life changed slightly today.  My part-time job will end unexpectedly at the end of July.  This is bitter-sweet - I will miss the disposable income (which has been disposed of at the fabric store, mostly) and I will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE staying at home again!  I retired a few years ago and when my husband was laid off, I was offered this job.  It's been a real blessing.  I have to believe there is something coming INTO my life that will also be a blessing and allow me to continue to share my…

The orphan quilts saga

I've used my blog for the past three days to tell the saga of the two orphan quilts I'd adopted thirty years ago. The blog is at this url: http://terrysthoughtsandthreads.blogspot.com. I've been in touch with the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell and will be bringing them for an assessment this fall. One is a Crazy Quilt, but without embellishment (really, without decorative appeal of any sort) and the other is a sweet dresden …

The happiest of memories

My cousin got the surprise of her life yesterday, a handmade quilt full of memories, love, gratitude and so much more.

She is a very special person but has endured so much loss in her life, I once heard a saying that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, but really he has tested her.

Upon hearing of the loss of her son, I wondered what i could do to help, lots of prayers and comforting words were spoken, but was it enough. Then it occured to me, to use my hands, as in…

Quilt Love

I just got back from a trip home to Boston.  While there I gave my best friend Addie a quilt for her 24th birthday.  She was ecstatic!  She kept going on about how it was the best present ever, and how no quilt could ever say "Addie" as much as the quilt I made her did.  I chose her favorite colors and lots of fabric with polka dots, which she loves.  Her boyfriend's mom is a quilter, and she has apparently been dropping hints that she wanted one of her own.  I had no idea!  I beat her to…

New beginnings

Being a quilter gives me great pleasure, I've always loved to sew and quilt. Whenever there is an opportunity I enjoy giving quilts as a gift. Today I presented my Pastor who is leaving our church for a new calling with a wall hanging that I did in batiks.

It was sort of a raw edge, my thought process behind that is like I said to him, "We're all a work in progress, unfinished and continuing to grow. There were little feet place on the quilt, sort of a coming and going fashion. It was…

Time is on my side (finally!) and how do you handle family situations-opinions needed!

Hello quilters!  As I said the other day in my post, I have just completed my bachelor's degree in nursing after starting in the field in 1979.  After getting my associate's degree in 1981, I was in the process of getting my BSN when I became pregnant with my first child in 1988.  I have spent the better part of the last 2 years taking both online and traditional classes.  There is such a weight now lifted off my shoulders!!  On my days off, I actually have nothing to do!!  It's so…

Is it just me....

or are a whole lot of the patterns in the quilt magazines these days, using such tonal fabric with so little contrast that you can't even tell what the pattern is until you look at the diagrams?

I find this kind of annoying, I can buy a blanket for lots cheaper than buying fabric and making a quilt if I want something that's virtually all one color.

I guess they are trying to showcase a fabric line, but nothing shines when it's just different size patterns of the same color…

Batiks

I was listening to Pat Sloan radio and they recommened that you always prewash Batiks to get the wax out of the fabric, they suggested twice if using the front once if you are using the back side for all Batiks are reversable. Has any one else heard of this I have not prewashed and I don't know if I am missing something.
