No so little ray of sunshine!

It's certainly been a while since I've been here and I am facing my own misery at the moment which I can't seem to get out of the box.  Quilting wise has been very slow for me and I can't get motivated my so called teacher and neighbour Maxine has now stopped doing any crafts with me and it's like she punishing me for not doing something.  So I found a local quilting groups which costs $15.00 for two and half hours of sewing why I can ask the help of a teacher and try to make friends. Now…

Charity Quilt Idea

Hello Ladies!  It's been weeks again since I've visited.  But...I have a new idea that maybe will appeal to some who are always trying to get those charity quilts into the schedule.

When I take a class to learn a new block I have a tendency to become bored repeating and repeating for 12 or 15 blocks.  The end result will be beautiful I'm sure, but I simply can't do it.  So...I take the newly practiced and learned technique and make one, three, four or five.  Then I can use those…

My White Log Cabin Quilt-It's New Home

 You can see the planning and initial work on The White Quilt [My Mansion In The Sky, Crystal River Running By] in the first article:    http://carolynscanvas.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-white-quilt.html. ;

For a long time I had the all white, log cabin quilt roaming around in my head made up of white on white prints till one day I had collected enough of the prints…

Iphone invisibility

Rogue - Apparently it is an IPhone thing - because a couple of friends with MACs have no problem, but say that the photos don't show up on their Iphones.  I gather that Iphones don't (won't? can't?) run Adobe Flash - which is the function that the website provider uses.  I have no way to insert Java, which would probably solve the problem.  I shall just have to hope that folks who are browsing using their Iphones will be curious enough to check using their computers.  And if I have any…

Caution: Be Careful Cleaning Rotary Cutting Rulers

Be careful how you handle & clean your plastic rotary cutting rulers. The grids and markings (on the bottom surface) can be damaged or removed if cleaned with the wrong solvents or liquids.

A friend just tried cleaning rulers with rubbing alcohol, and found that this removed the grid lines from 1 brand of ruler but did not damage a different brand of ruler. (So this can vary between different brands of rulers.)

I recently read that fingernail polish (which may contain…

Very strange, indeed

Rogue - Two friends checked, no problems.  One is my niece in Holland who runs a MAC and she says she can see everything - photos and all.  What browser do you use?  And do you have the updates?  Sometimes, if you don' t do the updates, the browser will quit reading the older version...

Can't see it

Thanks, Rogue - I've asked a couple of friends to check - I have an icky feeling that it's the Apple thing somehow.  That's definitely not a good thing.

Flash Player

Turns out that to see the photos you need Adobe Flash Player - which I think comes free - but apparently Iphones don't have, or something.  Hopefully, they'll eventually fix that little problem.

Website

Rogue - While I'm pretty savvy with a computer, so far I am resisting getting a smart phone - because I basically use a phone to phone people - and so I didn't worry about connectivity with smart phones and other devices.  Maybe go there, but not yet.  You won't see any quilts you haven't seen - but they are there to provide potential customers with an idea of what I do - which, while it probably isn't unique, is fairly unusual.  Hopefully get enough business to keep me in fabric, and…

Here we go again!

Boy, this on-line business stuff is not as easy as it looks.  Just closed my Etsy account and created my own webpage, to protect my personal privacy.  Don't know if anyone can find it without the URL, but here it is -- comments welcome here!  katheyscustomquilts.vpweb.com.

possible job

Well I went for an interview this afternoon.  At a private camp ground sort of like Thousand Trails.  They are called Cowlitz timber trails.  Only drawback is that it only pays $10/hr and I would have to work Thursday thru Monday.  Will have to talk to my dh.  I will hear by 5:00 pm. today. I will have to pray about it.

Web safety

Rogue - I have little confidence that FB is safe - and I'm pretty sure they sell data, as well - so there simply isn't much on my personal page - no address, no phone, etc -- but of course, to run a business, they have to be able to contact me somehow -- and Etsy seems to have some pretty good stuff in place.  I may be taking the FB page down, ditching the cute business cards with the FB address on 'em, and starting over.  Thanks to VistaPrint, they only cost me $10, so not a huge loss.

One step further

Now I'm on Etsy as KatheysCustomQuilts.  The plan is not to carry inventory per se - but to make quilts to order - as I have been doing for friends and family for years.  We'll see what happens!  Check out my site at https://www.etsy.com/shop/KatheysCustomQuilts

Time for another quilt project - this time it's documentation

Any of you who check into my site will notice that I am posting quite a few new quilt pictures and creating new albums.  Some of them are from the very early days of my quilting life, such as this one from 1975, a quilt I made for my mom and is in fact, the very first quilt I ever quilted.  I must not have thought much of the quilting process however,  because I went back to tying for several years!  And the quilting on this is pretty atrocious!…

New Business

Well, I've taken the plunge - sort of.  Got a business license, business cards, and a Facebook page -(https://www.facebook.com/katheyscustomquilts)

and we'll see what happens.   Not sure I want a lot to happen - but here goes.  What it's all about is making small (twin or smaller) custom quilts with embroidery embellishment to order.  I wouldn't mind doing one a month or so - but don't want it to be so successful (fat chance!)…

I Got This

t's been a long while since I visited this site and I have missed the creativity, advice,  and conversations you all give. It was a rough winter, not only weather wise (I din't mind that, the one benefit to cold and snow is more quilting time), but I lost my son in December to a horrible brain disease. My son was developmentally delayed and suffered from a disease much like ALS.  He was my "special" needs son. He was special. but not because of his illness or disabilities, he was special…

Keeping Myself in Stitches

After a great lapse of time, the opportunity arose in which I was able to pick up several messages in this train of written thinking from many people living in many areas of this country, and Canada.  All very enjoyable.  It has been my conclusion that quilt artists have more avenues of creativity than do the artists who paint on paper, or on canvas. Tools to use by quilt makers of today in their quilt making weren't even thought up merely a few years ago. Quilting had taken a back seat when…
