I'm a self taught quilter. Sometimes it takes me quite some time to figure out how I'm suppose to do any and all of it. I find a pattern I like then it takes time for me to understand the…Continue

Garnie P. Bethea said… That's great that you figured out the Happy Go Lucky templates! I hope your block turned out well. I've used Indian fabrics, but I've never seen Indonesian fabrics. Have you worked with the Austrailian fabrics? I haven't...they all look the same to me and I think they'd be hard to work with.
Thanks for mentioning the special scissors...I tried a sample using pinking shears but it was way too hard to cut! And I knew I'd never have the patience to use regular shears. Thanks for the idea too about sewing an X on each block before sewing them together! You've gotten me in the mood to work on it again because you just saved me a lot of time and frustration!
Since my mom never sewed I didn't know a thing about fabric when I started. All I knew was that you were supposed to have a stash! So now I have a huge stash and still crave more fabric! Before I started quilting I had a friend who did garnment sewing. She had a closet filled with fabric and I thought she was nuts when she'd want to go buy even more! Now I totally get it!
Thanks again for the tips! Oh, are you going to post a picture of your sample block? I'd love to see it! I never do sample blocks even though I know I should. I'm sure I would have saved myself from some of my disappointments!
Did you use regular scissors or special ones for rag quilts? I really do want to finish mine some day because I spent HOURS cutting all of the pieces. It just needs to be assembled.
Have you seen the John Deere fabric? Are you making curtains or pillowcases to match? I think that would make such a cute theme for a boys room. I hope you post a photo of the room when it's finished!
Hi Teresa...I noticed you added some pictures! I love what you've done! The one that looks like denim is one I've wanted to try for ages! I have all of the squares cut out (denim and flannel) for a king size bed, but I just haven't done anything with it yet. Mainly because I know it's gonna weigh a ton! My husband wanted a quilt like that for our bed, which is why I was going to make it in the first place! But I got distracted with what I really love...piecing and machine quilting.
Anyway, I'm a self-taught quilter as well and have been quilting for almost 6 years. I have always wanted to go to a class, but I live in a small town and there aren't any guilds or classes in my area. One day I hope to go to a quilt show as well. Hopefully the Houston International Quilt Festival!!!
I have made several quilts...the first ones were for family members and by then I was hooked, so I started making them to donate (mainly to children's charities as well as one for Alzheimer's research...the AAQI). Now I make them to sell as well. I need to be able to support this expensive hobby!
Well, I just wanted to say hello and that I enjoy your photos!
