i am a hand quilter, and i love your work, i am new to paper piecing, have mainly made baby quilts, and i have been quilting for about 40 years, now i am disabled due to a work injury to my leg adn back , damaged nerves and i have alot of time to quilt, and love every min of it
Luz, I would love to see where you live and your home. To post a picture on here all you have to do is, first have a picture in your computer that you want to post. Then click on the second button just about the words you have typed in this box, it will walk you through the process from there. It really is pretty easy. To add a picture to the gallery just click on the +add button on the top right hand side of the page.
Luz, it is wonderful to hear from you. I love this sight for a couple of reasons, I have been very inspired by many of the pictures that others have shared in the gallery, and I really enjoy talking with others that love quilting from around the world, not just about quilting either but about where they live and what it is like in their country.
This is a picture of what I see when I walk out of my front door at home, what does it look like where you are?
If you are ever this way, I would love to show you around my home town.
Thanks for checking in...I've been wondering what you've been doing...sounds like you're having the best of times! I really can't wait to hear all about it when you get back home. I really must get to the show some year. I have two friends in the Dallas area and it would be so fun to meet them and all go together. We just know each other from this site. I'm sure you're really having a great time in Miami...the weather is wonderful there!
Well, have fun shopping and I look forward to hearing from you when you get home!
Hi Luz! Sorry to not have written sooner; I've been pretty sick. I think it's just a really bad cold; the kind that likes to drag on and on. My husband brought it home, so it's his fault!
I'm trying to type on our new laptop computer, but I'm having a hard time. The keyboard is so different from the one I"m used to. I keep making mistakes and it's driving me nuts!
Oh, you know how I said I write to about 15 people? Well, I"m fine keeping up until I get sick. Now I'm so far behind I could spend all day here and not get caught up. I'll just have to make sure I don't talk too much like I usually do. Plus, I don't have a lot to say since I"ve not done too much while sick. The only thing I've done is work on a few sewing projects. I finished a table topper and listed it on etsy, and I've finished making the top for another one. I was hoping to get it basted today and make the binding today as well. I'll see if I'm in the mood or not.
So, today is November 1 and I'm wondering if you're in Houston now. I'm so jealous! I would give about anything to get to go. Some of my friends get to go every year, and one of these years I hope to be one of them. I just cannot afford it though. Especially now with my husband only working 2 days a week. You are going to have so much fun!!! I"m just happy that some of my Alzheimer's quilts will be there for sale. I think seven are going this year. I think the part I would enjoy the most would be the shopping. I hope you took along an empty suitcase to fill up! So, what day is the lunch with Ricky Tims supposed to be? Do you ever watch his show...The Quilt Show? It's an internet program that's really good. He and Alex Anderson are the hosts of it and it's like a regular TV program. I would love to meet him in person; he's a genius with quilting as well as with his music.
I hope you try a bunch of foods that are native to Texas. I used to live in Texas, Dallas. That was before I ever got interested in quilting. If I lived in Dallas now it would be a lot easier to get to Houston. Anyway, I miss the food there.
Well, keep me posted if you have time. You'll probably be exhausted at the end of the day and not be in the mood to write though. Are you staying for the entire festival?
Well, say hello to Texas for me and write when you can.
Hi Luz! Hope you're doing well. You know, I write to way too many people here. Every day I have about 12-15 e-mails to answer and I never have time to catch up. I didn't realize it was easy to make friends on sites like this. My neice has well over 1000 friends on facebook. Now how on earth can one person keep track of 1000 friends?
Wow! That's sure a long trip you have to make to get to Houston! Can you sleep? I cannot sleep at all on any sort of transportaion...not even in a car! One time I took a train from Seattle to Los Angeles and it took over 30 hours and I stayed awake the entire time! I got pretty bored until we stopped in San Francisco and got to have a break. San Francisco is my absolute favorite city.
There are quite a few quilts on Elena's website. Does it cost money to have a website? I use Etsy to sell stuff because it's so cheap. Only 20 cents to list something. To have a website costs a lot of money, but this looks like it may be a blog..is it? The things for sale are very cute! I was thinking of making some baby quilts to put in my etsy shop because it seems like that's something that'll always sell. Plus, they're not nearly as expensive as a regular quilt.
I used to spend hours in my sewing room until I hit the dry spell. After selling all my quilts I felt like a part of me died and I couldn't bear to go in there. I'm gradually getting back into it. I finished the table runner I was working on and now I'm making a Christmas table topper. I'm just making easy stuff like that for the holidays to put in my etsy shop.
Your Golden Girls group sounds so great! There is a group here that does scrapbooking, but no quilting groups. I think it would be great fun to have a group of friends to do stuff with.
Yesterday I bought a bike. I haven't had a bike in over 30 years and it took me some time to be able to ride it. I'm still kina wobbly on it. I ride an exercise bike every day, so I thought it would be easy on a regular bike, but I was wrong. I was exhausted after riding for only 15 minutes. Today I rode for a longer time, but then the wind and rain started up so I had to come home.
Well, I should go and try to catch up on some e-mails. I hope you have a great weekend!
So, when is the show? It used to always be at the end of October, but I think they changed it. I guess I assumed you'd been there before. It's supposed to be HUGE~how many days will you be there? Are you going to take any classes? I think that's ood that they stopped doing the quilt fairs you mentioned...especially the one in Barcelona; I'd think it would be a popular event there.
Wow! The Hilton! You're really doing it in style! That's great! Usually you have to make reservations well in advance and you're lucky to find such a good spot!
I can see how it wouldn't be worth it to sell your things; especially if you're using Japanese fabrics. Here they are terribly expensive. Normally we pay $11/yd for fabrics but the Japanese ones are double that!
Can you check that website again where you and your daughter make the baby quilts? I went to the address listed and it doesn't exist. I'd be greatly interested to see what you've got going on there!
I am finally getting in gear with quilting again. I finished my little alzheimer's quilt for my october donation and I made it all by hand, which is something I say I hate to do. Well I had a lot of fun making it. And since I had so much fun that inspired me to get moving on the table runner I started ages ago. I have it basted and ready to quilt and I need to finish it soon because it's going in my Etsy shop for sale and it's an autumn theme. So I'd best hurry up.
I want to learn how to sew. I have a few friends on this site who have been encouraging me. There is a big store here that sells fabrics and all kinds of other related items and crafts, but they are not a quilt shop so I never buy fabric there. It's a chain store and one woman recommended I take a class from them. Well, even though it's a good sized store, they have no classes whatsoever. How is anyone supposed to learn how to sew these days? I taught myself how to quilt using books and the internet, but sewing to me is so much harder! Maybe I should just stick to my quilts!
How in the heck did a cat get in your house? We once had a neighbor who had a pet ferret and it came in through our dryer vent. That was a panic for sure!!!! I don't like rodents at all and I can't believe people here have ferrets for pets! I had to get out of the house while they caught it because I didn't want to see it!
I suppose I'll close for now. Write when you can! Take care!
You're right...I was confused...I thought you were going alone to Houston and meeting friends there. This will be so much fun going with a friend to begin with! I can't remember...have you been to this show before? You are going to have the very best time!!! Everyone raves about it! I do hope I can go at some point in my life. When are you leaving?
I did see your pictures of the quilting event and it looks so professional! I keep checking your page to see if you've finished your purse. It sounds so cute!
So, how was your Wednesday class? I'm sure you've had a few by now. I get so behind writing sometimes becuase I write to way too many people I've met here! Plus, sometimes I get really long winded!
You know, I don't see how you have time to accomplish so much! I don't see how you have time to make all of the fabulous quilts you make!
My only news is that I'm finally working on a project that's close to completion. I've been in a slump for such a long time and have been unable for whatever reason to finish anything. I make one quilt a month to donate for Alzheimer's research and I'm good about doing those, but normally I would have turned in my October one by now. I just couldn't think of an idea until the other day, so I've been working on that. This time the entire quilt is being done by hand. I always say how I hate hand quilting, but I need to try things before saying I don't like them! Plus, it's a small quilt that I can do anywhere.
Our weather has changed now. It's pretty cool with lots of rain. We had a very nice summer this year, and for that I'm thankful. It's been several years since we had a nice summer.
Since I've been working on so many projects, yet not finishing any of them, my sewing room is quite the mess. Today along with working on my alzheimer quilt I plan on getting organized again. My girlfriend has a huge mess in her sewing room and I don't know how she can even think in there! But it works for her! I have to have total organization or I get overwhelmed.
That's about it for now...please do remember to post a picture of your purse!
That would be neat if you could take pictures of my quilts on display! I'd love to see the whole display. It's the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative booth, and so far the quilts that are going are #6676, 6872, 7050, 7329, and 7632. If you want to see them, just go to this link and when you click on the last 6 or 7 quilts the page will come up and it'll say "holding for Houston". http://www.alzquilts.org/wideman.html They're just small artsy quilts and that's why they take 1500 to sell. I'm hoping they'll take the Lily one too...they are always adding to the quilts they're taking. I'm trying to raise $1000 and I'm over $700 so far. I really should hit the $1000 mark if all of these sell. Anyway, I'd really love seeing pictures of something I did actually displayed somewhere! I once had a quilt hanging in a gallery...that one was made for ALS research and I don't know whatever became of it.
That sounds like so much fun to make a big purse with a Spanish Sunbonnet Sue on it! I wish I knew more about sewing. I've made few very simple bags, but I don't understand sewing patterns, so I can never figure out how to do the lining part. I'm actually surprised I even took up quilting in the first place since I'd never learned to sew. Anyway, I can't wait to see a picture of your bag! That sounds so original! Are your bags going to match or are you using different colors for the dress and fans? Are you going to use black lace for the fans?
I hope you've heard from your American friend by now; hopefully she didn't break anything! Will she be going with you to Houston as well? She lives in Florida, doesn't she?
I'm still trying to get back into a quilting mood. It's very slow going. I've never been in a slump that lasted this long! I have finished piecing a table runner and the backing and batting is cut, so I really just need to baste and quilt it. Since I quilt by machine it shouldn't take much time at all. My next project is going to be a Christmas table topper. I'm making small things like that for now to put for sale in my Etsy shop. I sold two table runners last week. I sold so much stuff last year and lost the mood to quilt, so now my shop is pretty empty. I only have one quilted journal left and should probably make more of those since they're good sellers.
My husband starts up with school again tomorrow, so that'll be an adjustment for me. It's been nice having him home for six weeks. Now I'll never see him because if he's not in school or working then he's doing homework. I need to get back to quilting like I used to do. He used to work at a lumbermill doing 12 hour shifts and I hardly ever saw him, but I was so involved with my quilting and having so much fun that it didn't really bother me. It was actually kind of nice because I only had to cook dinner two nights a week. I'd spend hours sewing each week.
You're lucky you have friend to work on projects with. I wish my friend and I could spend more time working on projects together, but it's hard with her schedule. She doesn't want to be away from home in the evenings because her husband is home....but I'd sure love having the company!
Our weather has been changing. It's very windy and cool out with intermittant rain showers. I guess summer is about over. What's it like there? Do you get snow during the winter months? We will get about 2-3" snow every few years. We're on the beach, so we don't get much at all, but if you drive two hours over the mountains you'll see a lot of snow.
Well, I guess I'll get going for now. I'll be waiting to see the picture of your bag!
My husband is due to start school again on the 26th. He's excited, but I'm not. I've gotten used to him being home and I don't look forward to spending all of my days alone. My car still is not fixed, and due to some recent financial pitfalls it doesn't look like it'll be fixed anytime soon. So I feel trapped. It's really hard, but if I can just get myself back into quiting again I can keep busy and not sit around feeling sorry for myself! I have made a lot of friends on this site, so that helps keep the lonliness away. I have one friend here in this little town, but she works two jobs so I rarely see her. We like to work on art projects when we get the chance. Have you heard of Paintstiks? They're like large crayons that are oil based and used for designing on fabric. Those are fun to use with stencils. Have you heard of Spoonflower? It's a website you go to in order to design your own fabric; I tried it for the first time the other day and it was a lot of fun.
Well, there has actually been nothing of interest going on here, so I haven't much to say. I hope to hear from you again soon!
