"I use the same method as you do for unpicking, only instead of the scissors, I do use the tip of the ripper to "cut" the thread taking care to place "dull" side to fabric & sharp side to thread. One of the daring ladies at…"

"Sadly, this is a lesson every quilter seems to need to make at least once. A quarter inch is not a quarter inch on some other machine or some other ruler and once you make the mistake, you'll probably never do it again. Evelyn is right, if…"

"If you do that, aren't you making the whole piece "fit" the smallest length?(you are easing). That effects the overall size of the piece. OK for borders, I guess...but otherwise, I'd be checking my templates/cutting sizes. "

"Wow...there is a lot to this quilt piecing stuff.  I Love quilting and there is always something to learn.  I knew if you start on one machine you should stay on it for the whole project. "

"Doesn't the braid pattern involve rectangles cut on the straight , but laid out slanted? I'll bet it's a TENSION issue since you obviously use both machines for quilting . As you said , a 1/4 " is 1/4". The difference…"

"I also have heard to use the same machine for the entire project.  I don't know why, you would think a 1/4 inch is a 1/4 inch.  Good luck"

"Depending on how badly your sections are out , you may be able to ease in the difference keeping the longer strip on the bottom , the feeddogs will ease in the difference or go back and adjust the seams which will require a bit of picking ! I never…"

1/4 inch seams

I was making a braid quilt for my daughter wedding present. After I had three sections done, I held them up and noticed they were not the same length. The only way I could have done this was, when I realized I used two different machines. My Bernina  was used at home and my feather weight at my quilt group. Now what a mess I've gotten into.See More

Profile Information

Tell us about yourself
I am married and in my early sixties. We own an RV and have traveled to all 50 states. We have seven grandchildren ranging from 13 down to 1 year. We have 4 daughters combined.
I learned to quilt before they had rotary cutters and all those crazy rulers. I didn't pick up quilting until I decided to make my first grandchild a quilt. My friend introduced me to her churches group and I've been quilting with them since 2000. I am making my first braid quilt and have a strong desire to attempt art quilts using paint or colored pencils. This I will do this year.
Do you want to make quilts, or simply enjoy them?
20
How long have you been a quilter?
10 years
What is your favorite quilting technique?
I'm not a fan of paper piecing, but can do blocks without messing them up.
Why do you quilt?
I like the challenge. It's like doing a puzzle.
