you're welcome. founders grove is truely magnificent. the first time i saw redwood trees was on a motorcycle/camping trip down california coast late sixties. we stopped in founders grove. turned off the bikes. late afternoon...couldn't afford the time for hiking, much to our regret, and stood in awe. the feelings voiced by myself and each of my rowdy friends was exactly as you stated...like being in a cathedral. w/o intending...i noticed all were talking in subdued tones...almost whispers. i will never forget it. can still see and hear the silence.

A few years ago we were up in Humbolt co and drove up to the Founder's Grove. We walked under those huge trees very quietly indeed. It was like being on Holy Ground almost, a very special Redwood grove. Thanks for the links!

it is! i was working in eureka when i met my, totally unexpected by me :)), future husband. i did hear about, rather frequently from him, my never being home...either working over time or running...wonderful firm sand beaches for running, or hiking with my camera. or cutting firewood :)). the entire area is spectacular. we moved back after a number of years of living/working midwest and east coast. by then it had become more of an artist colony than a fishing & logging/lumber mill area, which is the local history. redwoods... i always carried my camera where ever i went. even to work, which caused more than a few stares and comments...no purse, just a camera bag & my wallet fit very nicely in it w cam and lenses etc. i told my questioners "this area is so beautiful, one can stand in one spot, pivot in a 360 degree circle with cam clicking continuously... and every frame would yield one incredible photo after another."

some of the pics in this second link are of lady bird and president johnson. but scrolling thru, there are several very nice pics of huge redwoods with thier feet in dense yellow green sword ferns, occassional pic of wild flowers in bloom. the area had huge daffodil farms at turn of last century. they are an heirloom variety, have feint sweet aroma. double ruffled...and cover open fields and roadsides where they have naturalized. and of course wild sweetpea, red clover & wild fox glove, deep blue/purple lupin thru shades of delicat feint lavender/white & white - where that %#|\*%}} naturalized papmpas grass has not wiprd it out. it is even destroying groves of wild rhodies and azaleas. on our trip last thanksgiving to see my fil, i noticed former hillsides where my friend and i would go to see the spring wonders, are now dense pampas grass fields. :(( ...i think that stuff should be banned. it is worse than kudzu!

i forgot to mention the roosevelt elk, they wander that region as they wish. are protected. and are one of the regions' major tourist attractions. seeing these massive animals wandering the edges of a fog shrouded beach between the surf and edge of forest...awsome.

if ever on the west coast. you and your husband MUST take a trip to "lady bird johnson state park" & "fern canyon" and the beaches and trails there. fog is indiginous to the northern california coast redwoods in humbolt county. the ladybird park trail climbs via winding paths through spring blooming wild rhodies and azaleas in almost dayglo bright shades of pink and salmon and more. they fairly glow in the fog shrouded massive redwood trees and ferns. the beauty is incredible, ethereal. and fern canyon is just that. a narrow steep canyon with small stream flowing thru. the staight verticle walls are covered in ferns. in spring there is a small bright yellow wildflower that puts spots of brightness here in there in the otherwise unbroken green walls of ferns. i love all things shrouded in fog. it is mystical. and i spent MANY hours and days hiking the redwoods and beaches in humbolt county, san francisco bay area, and other places my need to wander took me before i met my dear husband and we were joined by my beloved son.

This quilt was juried into the AQS shows in Grand Rapids and in Des Moines this summer. :)
