lollol ..weeellll ..yes, in my little world it really does matter. a quilt that i did w piecing front & bars on back  ..the bars on back corresponded to width of pieced areas on front. when basting in prep for quilting, i lined up straight seams front & back & bsted them so they wouldn't shift w handling. i checked freq to assure that they were being kept true during quilting process. i still operate on principle learned when great aunt taught me to embroider ..the back should look as good as the front ...ergo-- the quilting on front needs to work w the piecing on the back just as it does the front. i don't do all over meander either.    i will spend money for a backing if i don't have something big enough. it's a gift for friends who helped me so much over the worst of the summer months last yr. i just hope i can have it done by time we go visit again.

It really wouldn't matter, Rogue, just quilt what you want on the front. The back will just look fine, as it just needs texture. Your front quilting in those smallish squares will appear as a repeated geometric on the back :-))

good thought, riana, but wouldn't fit w my plan for quilting. will try to duplicate the original, tho almost impossible to see in book photo.

Wow, looking good, Rogue...whatever's in those " quilting pills" seems to work, lol! You could perhaps do an Amish style bar pattern on the back.

what i'm recreating ...and i mispoke earlier ..there's no inner border. it also appears to have used knife edge w/o binding. i had thought to do a wrap around binding, typical of early pennsylvania quilts. mostly because i want to represent pensylvannia here too ..it was the most beloved place we lived (for me & my son )over our years of coast to coast wandering following construction jobs :)

thank you ladies ..been a slow start, still too painful at times to sit for long. took three days to finish ten blocks, but loaded up on pills yesterday and have now finished forty sq in a sq units. hopefully i can do some more today and star assembling some of the four unit blocks.

ginny ..thank you. i love 1800's repro fabric. this quilt will be my interpretation of a quilt from new england circa 1825-50 that i found in one of my quilt history books. i have quite a largish stash of 1800's scraps and fq's from yard sales and mil church friends. i also think i have enough for setting squares & inner border than another for outer border. when i  uy i try to buy enough to use as backings for future quilts. i may not, tho, have a piece large enough in appropriate tones for this quilt. hope i do, but may not.
