Hi. Just wandering around and stumbled onto this discussion & pic. I have seen that block. It is not tippicanoe or crossed canoe. Have block base, the book and another similar block compendium are still packed. But my Deloris Henson book is unpacked & I recently acquired Jenny buyers new block book. Will look thru these sources & let you know when I find it. Be good for me as, like I said, I have seen this block, love it & have wanted to make it. ...maybe even make a quilt with it...be a cool miniature (as in wall ganging size)

Although it has the same outline shape as "Crossed Canoes", this is actually a more advanced quilters' version called "Harlquin Star" according to A Quilter's Companion by Delores Hinson, p.48. That one also sports piecework in the center square as well, but I like the one in the photo better:)

There is an encyclopedia of quilt blocks by Barbara brackman, if you can get your hands on a copy you could look it up.  I think you need to know the name of the pattern to start. that or go through it page by page.

It looks very similar to a Crossed Canoes block, with the variation of the diamonds in the points. Not sure I've ever seen a pattern like this one, but if you have the Electric Quilt design software, you might be able to draft your own pattern...
