your're welcome on both counts. my grmother raised me. i am sure my love of gardening, all things needlework and especially my frugal ways, which my dear husband also has issues with, are a result of my having spent my formative years living with her.

and as for the idea with the center...tho i have never done a quilt pattern this complex, i have done a few lone star type patterns and have found that trimming the seam allowances a small tapering amount sometimes helps. it reduces the bulk meeting in that center area, also it lays flatter. easier to "fan" the seams around the center point. good luck...post how it goes? thanks....

My husband says I take 'frugal' to the extreme...can't help it, my gram & gramp (great depression & WWII) were huge influence on me-thank goodness. And Thank you for chiming in on trying hand stitching and trimming down. Think I'll give that a try this wkend. Have nothing to lose as doing the applique, would lose more anyways.Greatly appreciate!

when i started quilting i had access ro very little fabric & less money ro nuy more. ergo, being the extreme frugal that i am, i have always sorted carefully folded and kept and used all my scraps. lot of my early fabric came from thrift and yard sales. quilts for family was fabric store purchases and those scraps were my "treasures". so..yah, i understand the idea of taking care of scraps as you go along.

i think the octogan idea is great...had thought of that before when i did the "view full size" thingy. what if you unstitch the center points - very gently - and restitch by hand ...trim seam allowances a bit ..... sort of a fudging thing...'cause those center points widening out are just so cool!

Thanks Rogue! I now have corners (simple strips) & 3" border on & it's set aside while I use up my bits & pieces from it into something. I can not MUSH the very ctr seam enough to my liking & am likely cutting it out & add hand applique circle (quarter size or octogon) to get it finished. I'm thinking I'll try another from her book, but smaller-bits & pieces of the pattern as what I have leftover is quite limited. I'm trying to 'train' myself to take care of my scraps as they're 'created' :-)
