Inspiring Quilters, Stitch by Stitch
Hello all you quilty friends! Want to join me in a CALENDAR QUILT SWAP? Everyone would make 12 identical blocks (1 to keep and 11 to share with your team). Each team would have 12 members representing the 12 months and each person would be assigned a different month. The block has to be representative of the month - color or design or materials. For example - in January something with winter themes - snow, penguins, polar bears, etc. In Feb - something with hearts or presidents. March would be Irish/green theme. April would be Easter. May could be spring/flowers. June - brides, graduation, etc. July - patriotic, red/white/blue. Aug - summer fun. Sep - school days. Oct - Halloween. Nov - Thanksgiving, fall. Dec - Christmas.
This swap will be for beginner quilters and beyond.
SIZE: 12.5 inches un-finished blocks
NUMBER OF SQUARES: You will get back 11 blocks - need 12 for a "quilt," and you'll want to make one to keep for yourself.
FABRICS: whatever fits your theme month - prefer not to mix flannels and cotton.
DESIGN: anything that fits your theme month - let's make this a usable quilt so take it easy on the embellishments
TECHNIQUE: pieced, paper pieced, appliqué, free form, touches of embroidery.
SWAP METHOD: Centralized.
hat means your calendar blocks will be sent to me - send me a friend request so I can send you my address. Along with your blocks send me a STAMPED self-addressed FLAT RATE envelope. I will use this to send the blocks back.
DATES: This will be where you will come for up-dates and any information about our swap.
SIGN UP DEADLINE: As soon as there are 12 players, a team will be formed and notices sent.
MAIL IN DEADLINE: ALL blocks must be in my hands by July 31, 2012 (I will be camping July 14-20 and will not have computer access, but my family will be home). Please - if you are an international player keep this in mind. Things happen, but it's not fair to make everyone wait. If you can get them done early, send them!
INSPIRATION: I looked up Calendar Quilts on the web and found lots of images. There are some beautiful images at http://www.google.com/search?q=calendar+quilt&hl=en&rlz=1C1...
You can also search SEASONAL QUILTS.
Please don't join if you're pressed for time or can't make the deadline. There's always next time!
If I have left anything out, or you have any questions, please ask!
YEA - WE HAVE 12! I put the months in a hat and drew them in the order names are listed below (actually, I used a box):

Permalink Reply by Mary Aldrich on July 8, 2012 at 9:52am I am sending one for August. I will be out camping for the next four days, but wil finish up my blocks and send them off by the end of the week.
Permalink Reply by Karen Lightman on July 9, 2012 at 2:24pm Okay Melanie...I got my 11 for May and 2 for August blocks in the mail today. Hope you all like them!
Permalink Reply by Melanie Keith on July 9, 2012 at 6:12pm Thank you Karen and Mary.
I finally got started (late as usual) and here's my first attempt for Sep harvest block (see below - can anyone help me insert pix here without uploading files?). Only one problem - got my math wrong and it's 13 inches, not 12.5 - hoo boy, back to the cutting board!
Permalink Reply by Marcia Fowler on July 9, 2012 at 8:36pm This is a beautiful block!!! Just take 1/2" out of middle square right? I went to PO and bought flat rate envelope and will get it in the mail to you asap...thank you so much~~~~:)
Permalink Reply by Melanie Keith on July 9, 2012 at 11:11pm Thanks for the tip, Marcia. That helps a lot because I have a couple blocks that I cut wrong size (width of scale and not size of block) - funny how that works out sometimes. Will have to give that a try.
Another orphan....
Permalink Reply by viki hagan on July 10, 2012 at 11:01am I have a whole quilt going out of orphan and 'extra' blocks. It's looking a bit like color blind quilter trying to make a sampler quilt, lol. It's ok though, I only intend to use it as a blanket under something more attractive.
But, occasionally an orphan block is large enough to be the center of a medallion quilt. Your block is pretty.. and large enough.. to do that with it. Add a few interesting borders and you've got a table topper, baby quilt, lap quilt, wall hanging already started and you didn't even know it.
Permalink Reply by Melanie Keith on July 10, 2012 at 6:38pm Hadn't even thought of that - great use of orphans! I'm getting a stash of orphans and of finished table toppers - must be time to give something away.
Permalink Reply by Carol Olson on July 10, 2012 at 9:38pm I think the block is great and you can send me a booboo I would love to give it a new home
Permalink Reply by Cindy Stowe on July 10, 2012 at 6:57pm Melanie, the turkey blocks will be wobbling their way to your place tomorrow. Plus an August block, a Friendship Star block.
Permalink Reply by viki hagan on July 10, 2012 at 9:38pm I tell ya, I'd forget my head some days if it weren't attached.. my mind on the other hand, long gone.. I have the Aug. blocks sitting right on my desk ready to go to the post office. So I got up this morning, headed to town, picked up a friends mail, went to the post office to check another friends mail, dropped by the grocery store and came home.. to find the Aug blocks still sitting right on my desk where I left them. Sheesh.
Permalink Reply by Marcia Fowler on July 11, 2012 at 1:46am Sounds normal to me...LOL!!!
Permalink Reply by Melanie Keith on July 12, 2012 at 10:44pm Viki - that sounds like a normal day to me, too! Deadline isn't until 7/31, but you can send when you remember, if you remember! Whole lotta things going on - sounds like you need a de-stress day...
