Who's up for another charm swap??!! Sign up by June 23, 2012. Check out the guidlines and join in the fun!!

Guidelines

Send 6    5" x 5" fabric pieces ( charms) to each of 9 people in your group.

When you sign up you may indicate your preferences, however, it is senders choice what to send, any color, any theme.

Try to send 6 different charms to each person ( there has been some problems with to many duplicate fabrics in some packages)

Fabric can be washed or unwashed.  Must be 100% cotton, not rough, thin, stiff, or see-through ( if you can see the fabric below the charm you have on top it is to thin). Please remember to give fabric you would use yourself.

Place charms in a zippered plastic bag and label whether they are washed or unwashed.

Affix a label with your name and address to the outside of the plastic bag ( The bag helps to protect the charms should the envelope rip open, the address label lets the PO know where to return them if the envelope does rip open)

Send me a message by June 23, either thriough a MQP private message or email me at  mjaldrich@live.com with your name and address. Please do not post your address in the comments to this discussion. I will compose a mailing list of addresses for each group.

Charm packs must be received by the rest of your group by July 15th. Please allow plenty of time for the PO to deliver your charms. If you will be unable to meet the deadline, or have to drop out of the swap please notify me immediatly so I can try to fill your spot in the group.

There will be 10 spots per group. Additional groups will be added as needed.

Would love to join in.  I am a new member,so I am looking forward to getting involved with the "fun"!

Hi Darala.  The groups have filled up for this time around, but I will be starting the next round towards the end of July.

Have the charms for group 2 cut and  packaged and will get them to the post office later this week. Doing SWAPS are so much fun.

Hello Mary, I have a question about the "Charms". I just read that someone was cutting her "Charms" and getting ready to send them and I was wondering what kind of fabric everyone is using. I worked in the fabric business for quite a while and the terms "Charms", "Jellyrolls", and "Layer Cakes" are copyrighted trademark names for only Moda fabrics. So I was wondering if we are sending only Moda fabric and if we are not then we should probably call it a 5" square exchange? I know that many people in the business are very touchy about the names of their products being used for products that are not theirs. However, if we are only trading Moda fabric, I doubt they would care if we cut it into "Charms".

Are we cutting them out with a pinking cutter or pinking shears?

Hi Lin~~Mary will have an answer for you, I'm sure, but just thought I'd share that as a quilter of 0ver 40 years I can say charm quilts have been around forever...long before Moda started selling their "Charm Packs".  quilterstudio.com (or it may be quilttersstudio.com) has a short article on the history of charm quilts.  So I think we're fine using the term "charm".  Don't think we have to worry about the quilt police coming after us!

I'm so sorry I missed out on this swap!!  I've done the others and loved the charms...have a nice stack.  Hopefully I won't let the next one slip by!

Hi Lyn. i was certainly not trying to infringe on any copyrighted trademark of Modas by listing this as a "charm" swap or limiting the fabric to Moda fabrics. Many of the quilters I know refer to 5" squares, regardless of which type of fabric they are, as charms.  Even when searching for patterns on the internet there are "charm" patterns that are not by Moda nor do they use Moda fabric but rather refer to the use of a 5" square or charm. As Jo Ann mentioned charm quilts have been around long be for Moda started selling their precut charms, and since we are not selling anything in our swap I don't think we have to worry about it, but I will look into it. Some of the participants do use Moda, but it is not a requirement of the swap, as long as it is a good quality fabric that you would want to use in your own projects it's fine. It is not necessary to use pinking shears or cutters, but you can if you want to.

I, also, have not received anything from Connie Tech

Perhaps she lost the addresses?

I have dropped a line to Connie Tesch for an update from her.  The last time I heard from her she was getting her pieces cut and was planning to send them out last week. I will let you know when I hear back from her.

Group 1 I have your charms cut and they will go out tomorrow.

Angela, I received your charms today.  Very pretty!  Thank you sooooo much!

only ones I'm missing are Angie, Mary & Pat. Carol, your 2 sets arrived today, I guess this is for both groups? They're gorgeous! All the rest are really pretty & I will definitely put them to some good use!

I find this post w/questions about "charms" vs 5" squares and copyright infringement very disconcerting. I have been told time and again that there aren't any "quilt police". What a frustrating thing to have to deal with and how frustrating that this had to come up and quite frankly spoil the intent of these swaps!! These comments and swaps are between "quilting friends" and we all use these terms regularly. If the quilt police are going to be monitoring this sight, I'm outta here!!
