I have made four memory quilts and each one was done differently and with each one I learned a few things, mostly what not to do on the next one. Two were pieced and two were appliqued but all were…Continue

Thank you. I am thinking of making this from his clothing and since the father is a good friend of my husband's I asked my husband to talk to him.  The death was on Sunday and having found this site and this page, it was all I could think of to offer comfort to him and his younger sons.  I will wait a bit as the service is on Friday and let my husband ask his friend. Thank you so much for the advice. I did a memory wall hanging of my father-in-law with pictures for my mother-in-law years ago. It is now at my house as she passed away and I told my husband that I wanted it for our boys since they they are in some of the pictures I included.  His siblings all agreed it should come back to us for our boys. Thank you so much for your advise.

one reason i offer immediately to make the quilts is that i make them from the person's clothing. families love this sooo much.

Wanda, tell them you are a quilter and you would be honored to make them a memory quilt, if they would like one. i recently made one for a family from our church, when one of their adult daughters was killed in a one-car accident while drving under the influence. they have all told me what a comfort it has been. their younger children love to cuddle under it. the family says they are "snuggling with Sarah" (the deceased daughter/sister), when they curl up with the quilt. i definitely say offer them the option

This is a hard one, I agree with Lana about timing.. if it was very recently it could rub a little the wrong way arriving too soon..but they are your friends so do what you think is best.. like she said, you can always wait to present it, maybe when the hurt and anger have passed. A suicide is much harder to deal with than a regular death, so just do what you feel is best.

I always ask people if they want one before I make them. Currently I am making one for my niece who is under treatment for breast cancer.

I think a memory quilt celebrating his life is a compassionate gift. Not having been through something like that I would think timing would be key! I would think that if I got something like that and wasn't ready to face it I would put it away until I was ready. So I would say make it and present when it feels right.

I have a question and would like some advice. A dear friend's son committed suicide and I am wondering if it would be appropriate to make a memory quilt for his family?  It is a very difficult time for them and I am wanting to comfort them not add to the pain they are suffering.

I just recently made a Memory Quilt.I use a lap top pattern they girls wanted and they gave me pictures and quotes to put on the blocks and I scatterned them all over. I chose the material to use and it came out really good. In fact there is a picture on my page that shows the quilt. Its called  For the Love of Alex. And they were quite pleased with the quilt. I uesed stablizer for the pictures and quotes. Another Memory Quilt on my page is called My Shining Star. Please feel free to look around my pictures.

Maggie, i use the "quilt-as-you-go" method. i make many memory quilts. some are from t-shirt collections, some from baby clothes, and some from the clothing of the dearly departed. i sometimes add photos or messages that i print out on fabric.
