Like so many other quilters, I was tremendously inspired last spring when the American Folk Art Museum exhibited 650 red-and-white American quilts in the Park Avenue Armory, the largest-ever exhibition of quilts in New York City's history http://www.folkartmuseum.org/infinitevariety. The quilts were on loan from the collection of Joanna S. Rose. Those fortunate enough to attend the exhibition said it was breathtaking.
As a user of EQ7 design software, I decided to design my own red-and-white quilt with all original blocks. This is the first completed block for my quilt, and I'm happy to share the pattern with other EQ7 users. The block, which I've named Gemstone, is sewn in a variety of old and new fabrics. EQ7 users can click on this link http://www.americanquilter.com/publications/downloadable_files.php to open the PJ7 file, then save it on your computer with your other PJ7 files. My block size is 12" square, but you can resize your block in EQ if desired. There are several colorations of the block in the file.
Enjoy!

Comment by Marlene Baerg Oddie on April 11, 2013 at 11:44am Looks like it is a fussy cut block from a Paula Nadelstern fabric.

Comment by Karin E on April 11, 2013 at 12:06am Thought I'd share this quilt that I designed in EQ7 for my son's 21st birthday. It was the second quilt I ever made, so I'm especially proud of it. Since this pic, it was expertly longarm quilted, and really turned out beautiful. My rule while quilting gifts is that I only quilt when happy. I never force myself to work on a gift. That way, when I present it to the recipient, I can honestly say that it is a gift filled with love and happiness, and that I enjoyed every minute of it!
Comment by Catherine Richards on March 14, 2013 at 4:32am For Kathleen or anyone else interested I attached my stitch outs of the EQStitch Lessons and some experiments of my own. My photos are not the best, but if you can see that the buttonhole in the center of the stippled tulip is reversed from the smaller tulip without stippling. Don't know why. They did come out nicely.
Comment by Catherine Richards on March 14, 2013 at 3:17am Kathryn--EQStitch is definitely worth playing with. Sometime ago, I downloaded the project called "Bunny Pillow" from DoYou EQ. I didgitized the redwork bunnies in EQStitch and the end project was very nice. The digitizing does skip around alot where a regular digitizing program would probably not. Even without adding any extra tie off in my regular software, I was VERY PLEASED with the results. When I stitched them on my embroidery unit they came out very nice. The satin stitch applique apple in the lesson came out very nice as well--Its something I can't wait to try for a nursery quilt. All and all, EQ Stitch is the best thing to come out in years. I just love it. Good luck with your designs
Comment by Kathryn Bates on March 13, 2013 at 2:36am Thanks, Catherine. Not giving up yet, but need to have some step-by-step lessons. I am a kinesthetic learner (fancy word for have to be shown - can't learn from manuals!) so have to schedule some one-on-one time with the guy at the shop. Just can't find the time with everything else in my life! In the meantime, I'll see what happens with EQStitch. I want to be able to create and edit quilting designs - don't use embroidery for much of anything else, but do ALL my quilting using my embroidery machine - so being able to create my own block designs, stipples, and borders is what I want to use this stuff for.
Comment by Catherine Richards on March 13, 2013 at 12:59am Kathryn--don't give up on your Floriani. I have 5D embroidery software. The EQStitch does some nice things--but it doesn't compare. EQ Stitch is way to limited--you need to be able to hand sort colors and add tie offs etc. It does give you a great place to start and digitizes simple things very nicely (for example the hearts in the tutorial and the apple in the tutorial) I think EQ stitch will be very useful, but it doesn't replace the digitizing software at all. On another note, the EQ stitch seemed like it was locking up to me, but really, it takes a long time to think when it converts art work to stitches. I found I had to be patient, especially if it was a large design. Is all too much fun!
Comment by Helen M Porter on March 13, 2013 at 12:59am very excited just received my EQ Stitch, already have a problem I think. I have a Bernina embroidery module not sure they are compatible.
Comment by Kathryn Bates on March 12, 2013 at 10:40pm Got EQStitch this past week. Haven't spent much time on it yet, though I did go through the basic introduction and the tutorial on embroidery. Tried to design an embroidery design with some success - I find the tools easier to use than EQ7's drawing tools -- but had it all quit working on me just as I was about to save. I've had this happen with EQ before, but it doesn't happen often enough to make much difference - just reminds me to save oftener. In the middle of piecing a quilt, so not ready to focus on this yet. I also bought the Floriani Pro digitizing software (a whole lot more expensive than EQ Stitch) and suspect I may be trying to return it -- as it is not nearly so easy to use and really has more complexity capability than I am really interested in.
