Our local community college is doing a music program and wants to have some quilts on display (Americana theme).  I am reluctant to take my great-grandmother's quilt, or any that I have made, as I don't see this as a secure area.  The audience also is probably not familiar with the "no touching" rule for older quilts.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  The concert is in late October, 2012.

the "no touching" rule, i feel, also applies to modern made quilts. fabric is protected from grimy skin oily hands of shoppers and store personnel in the stores, by the sizing used in the final stages of manufacture. when you wash fabric it is removed, and is the primary reason i prewash all my fabric & new clothing, and with it's removal, the protection it had offered to the fabric.

i would suggest to the school that the quilts be placed high & out of reach. for both security reasons & to thwart the touchy feelyness some seem to think that quilts beg for.

that is if you decide to loan them. i had a local cafe owner ask to use antique quilts to decorate a barn for ..dunno, a homey craft shop thing. i told her that i seriously doubted she would find anyone willing to risk a priceless or even not priceless antique quilt to that sort of situation. non-quilters...they love the look of, and what is represented by old time quilts, but they don't know about or respect thier fragility and value.

Thanks - I was feeling guilty and selfish, but also protective.  Glad to have your perspective!

Why don't you ask them how they plan to display them and what your concerns are..then decide. I would agree that it's probably not a very secure area, but who knows, maybe the organizers have been to some shows and are aware of the no-touching policy and the value of antique quilts so they have made plans for that. If you aren't satisfied with their response to your questions and concerns then I personally wouldn't risk it, not with the antiques anyway.

Good idea - maybe if they were put on the stage where the performers stand, as backdrop...unfortunately, I will be out of town that weekend and can't supervise or even hear the production!  (I am suppose to be IN the production, actually, and will be missing it!).  I appreciate your ideas!

ok...been thinking about this. why were you supposed to be in the production? that sounds so exciting ..so..now i HAVE to ask..why would you be put of town when you could be singing or acting, asks the frustrated forever wanna be singer who always ALWAYS choked up to point of nearly total laryngeal paralysis..lollollol! hmmmm?
